You stand next to the bag too much without punching and dance back away from it. That is a no-no. Throw more punches. Don't worry too much about practicing defense on the bag. The bag is for power.

Watch Jack Dempsey on the heavy bag. He fought nothing like the way he worked the bag. He was very physical with it and just laid into it. Trust me that works for building power.
