  • Losing confidence when you get hit too much

Am I the only one who when I get hit a lot and don't return fire. still getting my hits in every now and then. but not nearly enough as I get hit when I face someone taller or with longer hands. am I the only one who loses confidence?

    a bit of a story:

I was sparring with a guy who went hard today (Which is really unusual for me as I always go light so throwing punches with force is so strange) which is fine. But he kicked my ass because of his reach and height I got hit WAY more than he did.not a lot was clean but he hit my gloves and stuff and that discouraged me. it got to a pint where I hit him with a 1-2 and he backed off. then I hit him with a 1-2 and he covered up on the ropes and I hit him with a punch to the ribs and he went "ow!!". I backed off at that point because in my 4 months of training. that is probably the hardest punch I ever landed with the intention to break one's ribs. I just got discourage from all the hits he got off vs me.granted he had a major reach and height advantage but am I the only one who am affected by this?

I think its good to take a few hits here and there, it reminds you you are not as good as you think you are and encourages you to reassess and go back to basics (I bet it wasnt flashy combos he probably hit you with a simple 1,2,3)

Going back and readdressing the basics is never a bad thing

You cant play boxing, at some point (if thats 3 months or 3 years) you are gonna come up against someone that is better than you. Its how you ride the punches and learn from it that matters

You dont get better by fighting weaker opposition

Dont lose confidence in yourself. Take this as a way to improve. I would say if you are getting caught by a taller/rangier fighter you need to improve your footwork. 9x's out of 10, a shorter fighter does himself no favors moving in and out if you just move into your opponents punching range.

I recommend that you don't get hit so much. And when their volleys end that's when yours should automatically start up. Unless of course he is out of range. (Or if you're advanced you can just work inbetween his timing.) Always remember exactly where your heads at..https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5rAOyh7YmEc at all times

For me, as a beginner, boxing so far has been all about being reminded that you're nowhere near as good as you thought you were!!
Every time you lose confidence, you should gain a desire to improve. And you will improve. You will spar with the same guy again and even if he kicks your ass again, you'll hopefully be a little better.

And as you get better you may spar with people who aren't as good as you and you dominate them in the ring, but after you don't feel proud or happy because they're not as good as you.
So after every time you spar you're either thinking "That guy wasn't so good, I went easy on him but I hope he's OK and not discouraged." or "Damn, I suck, I really need to get better."

I felt like I "lost" seeing how I got my ass kicked because he had double my reach. but I was pretty nice to him seeing how i just gave him 1 punch to the ribs and got a reaction from it while he was covered up. As soon as I get inside on pretty much anyone I never get outpunched. Yes I'm a t-rex as my arms are short. -.- it is a horrible curse.
