  • Glove Review: Cleyto Vs Ringside

If anyone is interested ive been training quite hard with a few different gloves of late and wanted to give a review/update on a couple of pairs of gloves

Cleyto Reyes Velcro Sparring Gloves: Cost circa £260

I was really excited about these, like a kid at Christmas, 1st impression was the glove is very slender, well stitched and of a good quality leather. These would suit someone with average sized hands, although they have given a bit with time, the larger handed individual may struggle to fit in these comfortably.
The wrist support was not what i was expecting and although sufficient, i felt it could do with a slightly larger cuff (maybe another 1cm to go further down the wrist).
It is true what they say, these are punchers gloves, the padding does not feel very much however, i in no way have hurt my knuckles or hands, but these do feel as though you are punching with wraps on only.
They are made with great quality leather and after countless punches thrown on the mits, bag and peoples ribs, the gloves are finally starting to lose their shape and the padding inside is becoming quite unevenly placed and i have had on average a good 6 months outta these.

Ringside Alpha Series Pro Spar Velcro circa £135

What a dark horse, these gloves were nice and compact like the Cleyto's, felt very supportive but i feel had better/stiffer wrist support in the cuff.
My hands felt a lot more protected inside and the padding is very evenly displaced.
Leather is not as soft as the Cleyto but it is full leather and no signs of any real blistering or cracking as of yet.
I think the gloves would suit someone of a larger hand size better than the Cleyto
Punches felt like they were doing less damage than the Cleyto however the hands felt like they were wrapped in pillows at times. - I have got a good 4 months outta these and i would say they are holding up inline with usage to the more expensive Cleyto

To summarise, the Cleyto is the better glove, no doubt about it but it is not twice the glove of the Ringside as the price would suggest. If your looking for a decent glove that isnt a crap generic sports shop mass produced synthetic leather, (and if you dont have buckets of cash) really consider the Ringside as your next option. It doesnt have the Kudos that the Cleyto has but the design and print looks very modern

    Thanks for reading

Thanks for taking the time to write that up. I'm surprised the cleyto reyes weren't better considering the price. What weight of gloves were these?

I've personally found Title platinum line of gloves to be great value. Good leather and build quality, and they are very durable. On sale you can get them for $60 but usually run $70-100. I'd link the ones I have but they're discontinued.

Both were 14oz, don't get me wrong the Cleytos are one of the best gloves I've used behind Winnings. But they are twice the price of the ringside but not twice the glove.

I think you are paying for the name a little and the heritage. I think you can get some very good almost as good gloves for half the price of the
Cleyto. I know some people who really like the Rival RS11V and these are a good £100 cheaper than Cleyto and are very close in quality.

I'm yet to use Grants other than a few swings on the bag so hopefully will get a try

In life you tend to get what you pay for but their are times you are merely paying for a brand.

Ive never even tried Cletos before. Almost every store around me sells nothing but Everlast or Adidas

Yeah everlasting are a funny one. I find they are very high end and good or footlocker and (I hate to use the term) casual.

And it's hard to find something in between that is good for the competent amateurs

As long as you stick with AIBA appeoved, adidas are fine. Anything non AIBA approved are for a meat head with a heavy bag in his garage

Should have said, everything's else adidas I try is genuinely quite good, but they just can't seem to hit the sweet spot with gloves.

Thanks for doing the review. Cleto Reyes gloves have a good reputation but I always wonder if they are worth the price.
