  • NO Boxing in boxing gym (ADVICE)?

hello i recently decided to start boxing to get in better shape and to pick up a hobby to do in freetime.

i paid my dues for gym access and coaching for the month and on my 2nd day i'm already discouraged

I feel as if my trainer isn't interested in training but instead just wants to watch tv. on my first day he had me do 15 mins on a treadmill and 15 and the elliptical after completing that we did about 2 minutes of mitt work then he just just told me to work on the heavy bag. left jab right jab left jab and i did that for about 15 mins then 10 minutes of jump rope after 3 sets of situps and pushups and he said i was done for the day

today on my 2nd day i started out with 15 mins on a treadmill and 15 and the elliptical and he proceeded to tell me that today is physical day and gave me a list of exercises to do such as push ups, sit ups , bicep curls and etc(simple things) while he just sat down watching tv . after completing the exercises excited i asked what was next and he said i was done for the day. NO BOXING was done and i was furious but my non confrontation side of me was thinking just be patient so i went home pretty mad and decided to search the web for advice. is this normal ? have you been to the gym and didnt box ? should i say anything ? p.s both days the gym was empty as i came at opening to fit my schedule, and honesty have learned nothing and feel as if im losing time and money any replies would be greatly appreciated. it just felt pretty crappy to travel from my house early in the morning to do exercises i could have completed from my bedroom and not even put my boxing gloves on . i was the only person in the gym while this "trainer" watches soap operas. At one point i looked outside the window and i see this guy enjoying a cigarette. i also feel like a sucker for basically committing to a month cause i get the vibe that this guy is basically just waiting for me too quit as if he isn't interested in teaching me anything and earning my repeat business.

Any replies will be greatly appreciated

Stick it out for the month, maybe the guy is just vetting you. See why are you really there to train boxing or just to soccer mom it?

but its just your 2nd day, even if he was personally teaching you all you would have learn by the 2nd day is how to do a proper boxing stance and how to throw a proper jab that you still havent mastered cause you havent learned how to turn it over automatically yet.

every gym is different, maybe you showing up too early lmfao. does he have other new kids coming in? if so what time? amybe you should come in the same time they do too. Easier to teach a bunch of kids together than to teach 1 on 1 the same thing 10 times.

Like Mikey said he is probably just watching you first
You know how many people don't come back after th3 first week
When I first joined a boxing club I was left to it on my own
      Couldn't even jump rope
And I was looking for help but got nothing
1month later I had everybody giving me tips
      Give it a month atleast
      Good luck

One more thing as a paying customer you can ask him to help
        Walk in and be like
        Yo,coach
Teach me how to work the heavy bag please
        If he says no
        Go elsewhere

          Be patient.

Maybe he is playing some mind game with you to see if you are really serious about boxing like the others said.
But this seems really unconventional to me, never heard something like that...

My prediction is that he wants to build up your strength and stamina before you start buisness,
which is understandable as it is key to the game and prevents further injury.

Perhaps you can simply try asking him directly why he has not been teaching you boxing...

Otherwise use the month and do your strength and condition workouts and leave if nothing happens.

I agree with some of the above comments, recon he is seeing what standard/fitness your at. Also we get loads of guys come to our gym, just want to smash the bag and then basically bum rush opponents in sparring and windmill away. They ignore constructive criticism and just want to test how manly they are by trying to KO someone.

Remember be patient, id give it a month, he should at least be teaching you basic fwd and lateral movement by then with fwd, jab cross and maybe basic jab, cross, hook combo by the end of the month.

I agree to ask, even if you think your text book, just say something like, I dont feel my jab is snappy enough or I feel a bit overstretched on my straight cross (even if your not) you should be getting basic feedback at least.

Good luck be patient, remember you wont be lomachenko overnigh.

I recommend filming bag work (much further down the lineof course) rest your cell against a waterbottle if necessary. Helped me see that my guard wasnt as tight as I thought and I started throwing the same combos towards the end of the round (is predictable for an opponent to counter)
