  • Be straight with me!

    Hello everyone,

First off i just want to say thank you for adding me onto your forum and that i am looking forward to speaking to you all. I am 19 years of age 6.5 ft tall and weighing in at 85 kilos and all round pretty fit. I have been looking into getting into boxing to see where this leads me in life. At the moment i'm not sure what i want to do or when i'm on a path of learning so to speak. I have cheap boxing gloves and a bag at home that i do small sessions on. But what i would like to know from you guys is just the truth. What does it take to become a pro boxer? How many hours a day of you life do you live for boxing? What motivates you personally to keep boxing? What are the costs of learning to box pro? These are a couple of questions i have been asking myself and where better to get an answer but here... I am looking forward to your reply's and after i might have a few more questions to add on.

    Thanks for your time everyone.

For one thing, it takes having a screw loose, that is, being a bit crazy. It isn't sane to want to volunteer to take punishment and risk severe injury and even death. For another, it takes a chip on your shoulder. You have to have the mentality of enjoying inflicting pain, and receiving pain for that matter, to be successful. You need a high tolerance and threshold for pain, along with a never-quit attitude. "How many hours a day?" Answer: 24. You need to eat, breathe, and sh it fighting. Immerse yourself in it. Fighting is a lifestyle, not a hobby. Wake up before dawn and do roadwork. Stay up late getting reps in on the bag ir sparring. It takes a real commitment to be successful. Dedication, determination, and discipline. Good luck to you, kid.

At 6'5" and only 85kg you're one tall ass boxer for your weight. I'm only amateur but i have several pro friends and let me tell you that boxing is a sport where it has to be the only thing you think about for you to even have a chance of succeeding and even then you may fail. My pro friends train 2 or 3 times per day which includes running every day. They don't drink, they don't smoke, they don't party. They eat strict diets most of the year and when they do go on holiday it's a relaxing holiday with the girlfriend or wife. It's a lonely life. Even as an amateur i'm always watching what i eat and because of this i often skip family meals and events. I don't drink while i'm competing (we compete sept-june) and i drink very little throughout the year whichh means group holidays with the lads, stag parties, birthdays, weddings you name it, these are all out of the question. You really have to want it more than anything else in your life OR you have to have an amazing talent. On top of this you need luck. If you live near or train in a respected gym which produces good calibre of professionals you're halfway there and you need to have a reason to sell tickets. People have to want to watch you for a promoter to invest.

Train hard, train clever, stay injury free and surround yourself with the right people.

          Good luck man.

People I know barely get the time to balance amateurs and a full time job or college. Pro's would take up much more time because you have to train longer to fight for more rounds. Amateurs can get away with being a little out of shape because fights are only 3x3 minute rounds and in some cases 3x2 minute rounds.

I think the OP meant his height was 6.5 meaning 6' 1/2" tall.

Boxing is a 24 hour thought process and you need an experienced trainer to teach and guide you through the distractions all boxers must deal with. You have NO chance being successful without a trainer who believes in you and you in him.

If you had the kind of coach that could take you into the pros, you would be getting these questions answered by him. That should be your first priority, to get a proper coach that trains and guides pro fighters.

Brilliant guys! thanks for all the help and reply's. I am going to make a few calls find out some personal trainers and their backgrounds then have a one on one with them and get a real feel for it. I understand there is a lot of training to do bu it does sound like a lonely path.... I will get back to you all after i have had a conversation with a PT.
