I'd guess PSI (pressure per square inch) would be your best bet. Not quite sure how to measure that, or if it's even definitive. Other than that, I'd say your in ring results and comparisons to others would be a good option. Compared to others, are you hurting or dropping folks (not that you should be trying to against sparring partners)? Can you make the leather between your gloves and the bag/mitts pop with out winging your shots?

It could also depends on the type of power we're talking about. For me, there's two main types of power that stick in my head (this is just how I think of it, not so much science as it is observation).

Explosive Power; Like a right hand from Tommy Hearns, the type of shot that accelerates quickly and moves right through you. Like a Ferrari hitting you at over 100 mph.

Structural Power; The type of power you see from a Matthysse, Golovkin, and Kovalev (that's NOT to say they lack explosiveness). Generally derived from from good balance, backing of the body, and a controlled center of gravity. Much more like a semi-truck.

Both of these things can be controlled and developed. It's just hard for guys who have been doing things a different way to all of a sudden begin to adhere to something so different as throwing their punches differently, fixing their weight distribution, or adjusting their stance, etc..

how hard you hit pads would determine on the reaction of the pad holder in most cases....

The Heavy Bag itself should have a visual impact and obviously you should be able to move the bag with a punch not a push ,the lower the bag hangs the harder it is to move. I hit mine on very low chained on both sides of the bag using all 4 clips on top of the bag on a iron beam making it extremely difficult to move 150 pounder ,I have a vid that shows this, more power body shots. I guess a loud sound can be an indication but it should also match the impact.

The problem is there are different types of punching power, however, if certain things happen regularly enough I think it's safe to assume you have power. Examples, not all inclusive, would be:

-sparring partners feedback, were they buzzed or stunned at any point, if you ever landed something solid

-trainer feedback after holding the pads can be one too

          - how much do you move the punching bag (need to qualify in relation to your weight and the bags' weight) without pushing it

          - how do you feel when you punch? Do you feel like your shooting some heavy ammo or do you feel like your fists are the equivalent of a wet paper ball?

          Hope this helps.

Okay because when I hit the heavy bag, when I hit the jab it budges alittle, when I hit the straight,it goes all over the place. When I hit the left hook correctly it bounces to the right a lot. I also have this weird sound everytime I hit the bag with the left hook. I don't get it with the straight or the jab though. Also it seems when the bag swings the most is when I feel that I hit the bag with my two front knuckles,as in I feel my two front knuckles going straight through the glove and wraps and into the bag is when I feel the bag swings the most. So I don't know what this means. But my technique sucks so sometimes I'm too embarrised to get on the heavy bag. I have not gotten to sparring yet though, which I'm thinking of around new years.

To your last point. When I punch the air, I feel like atleast from my straight right and my uppercut(which my coach has not taught me yet, just watched some youtube to learn) that there is this weird weight that is in my fist that just pulls me upwards, practicing enough straights and uppercuts about 5-10. My fist starts feeling numb for whatever reason

If you can post a video we could give an accurate assessment. Simple arm punches will make the bag rock around a lot. I tested it a couple of weeks ago by standing square on and literally used nothing but the elbow extension and I could make the bag jerk around quite a bit.
