    Wrist Pain?

Just started boxing lessons about 3 months ago. whenever i try to throw a left hook, my wrist hurts when i strike the bag or the pad. that particular wrist has always been weak. is there anything i can do to condition the wrist to be able to handle the impact without so much pain?

I have ensured i have thouroughly wrapped and taped the hand and wrist.

i can hit the bag with my other hand (my strong right) as hard as a want and there is no pain.

I suffer the same. I'm thinking of double wrap to make sure the wrist is tight. Are you using correct sized gloves?

I used to get those pains because I didn't put enough layers of hand-wrap around my wrist and not tight enough. So just tighten them and put thicker layers.

Technique could be the problem. What part of the fist are you hitting when you make contact with the bag or opponent? You should only make contact with the knuckles, not the knuckles/lower fingers flat part of the fist.

This happened to me about three months ago. My hands were wrapped and had my 20oz gloves on. I switched to south paw and threw a step in jab and I caught the bag at about as wrong as an angle possible. It sent a shock through my fist and up my arm. A couple weeks later, I got into a fight with an inmate and reinjured the same wrist. Basically, it will take 6-10 weeks to completely heal the sprain.

Don't punch anything because you will reinjure it easily. Take anti-inflammatories and use ice regularly. You'll get back. It'll take some time though. If you're like me, it's hard to not do something active that you love. Substitute with running, cardio, core work until you're healed.

Double wrap it, that's it. Use correct sized gloves.

strengthen the wrist. wrist flexion/extension exercises (just google some). a captains of crush gripper would strengthen the fist too.
