  • how to correctly hold pads

I have always held the pads like the following:

Fighter throws his jab to my left hand
Fighter throws his right to my right hand
Fighter throws his left hook to my left hand
Fighter throws his right hook to my right hand
    .
    .
    .

I have recently been looking into Mayweather style Padwork and Floyd SR randomly mixes it up.
For example, he lets the fighter throw both his jab and his straight right to his right mitt or both right and left uppercut to the right mitt

    So my question:
Is there a correct way of holding the mitts?
Why do most mitt holders let the fighter punch diagonally?
And why does Floyd Mayweather sr holds it differently ?

There's really no one correct way to hold the mitts.

Floyd Sr, Emmanuel Steward, Freddie Roach, Adrian Davis etc. all used different styles on the pads yet they all turned out successful fighters.

As ShoulderRoll says, there is no one right way to hold the pads. The way that pad-work is done will depend on the needs of the fighter, as determined by the trainer and/or the fighter. Chris Eubank (Sr), for example, was always in control of the type of pad-work he did, telling Davies exactly what he wanted, whereas the Mayweathers were more collaborative and fighters like Mike Tyson (under Cus, at least) just did as they were told

To emphasise proper rotation of the body when punching

And why does Floyd Mayweather Sr hold it differently?
My guess is that it is partly for the cameras, and partly for improving reaction-time rather than power. Also, it's a feel-good thing to help a fighter feel 'sharp'
