  • Need some help and advice on this!

    Hello people, I need some help. I am 21 years old and I am currently going to train 6 days a week for boxing inclusive training outside the gym cardio and such and my goal is to compete in boxing and see how far I can take it with the dream of becoming a good professional boxer. But my question is If I should and can add 1 or 2 lessons of judo each week to my training because it is also important for me that I know how to defend myself, whereas boxing will be for the striking and judo for the grappling. Where I live each dojo gives 2 judo lessons per week and I was thinking If I maybe took one per week I would have little bit progress in it and I could still focus 100% on boxing without hurting my boxing progress? Or should I take 2 lessons of judo it is only one hour per lesson. Will it hurt my boxing goals or is it something I can do? The feeling of knowing some grappling to defend myself next to my boxing is something that would make me feel more allrounded. But ofcourse I dont want Judo to have a negative influence on my boxing.
    What do you think?

    If the Judo is for specifically self defense and not competition then I would say forget about the classes. I learned some "grappling" in the street in order to protect myself. All you need to know is a basic takedown, how to defend against a takedown, and 1 or 2 chokeholds. Any guy that would try starting **** in the street I guarantee doesn't know **** about wrestling. Work on your strength too. Grappling is ALL about strength. Any time I was in a fight and it went to the ground (rare) I was usually stronger because I worked out a lot (but never bigger) and was able to throw them around easily even though they were at least attempting to do some grappling. If you know how to grapple AND are strong then the other guy is going to have a hell of a time and will surely regret it win or lose. Look up some basic stuff that I told you about online.

      No I don't want to compete in Judo it is just for self defence, my dreams and goals are with boxing. I was just thinking that If I would do one judo class per week it would give me the edge over the average joe if it were to come to grappling. I love boxing but self defence is also a high priority for me, knowing that you can defend yourself well with not only striking but grappling gives you a better feeling. I just don't want the judo lesson have a negative effect on my boxing in any way since I want to compete in boxing. Like if you where to get in a street fight and the guy has height and weight on you I would think that the grappling skills come in handy then instead of only boxing.

        But a lot of people told me already that doing judo next to competitive boxing would be negative for your boxing and you should stick to boxing only if you want to make it far in the sport.

          Honestly I don't know Judo I just know basic wrestling. It isn't something I practice at all I just know how to do it because it comes naturally. Judo from what I have seen is technique driven and about leverage. You have to practice to get good. With wrestling you don't have to practice for self defense. I'm not saying don't practice once you learn some moves just keep it simple enough where it comes off of reflex because humans are designed to wrestle. I grew up with an older brother so that probably helped too. Free sparring every day.

          If you want to take boxing far in life like me then you should try to avoid places/people that could get you into a situation like that. I rarely venture around my neighborhood unless its the early morning hours or when I do my roadwork. Every thing else I go far from my neighborhood because I know I'm safe. I was a knucklehead who used to fight a lot and it was always someone I knew. I don't think I've had problems with complete strangers... if that assures you any. It sounds like a ***** thing to do but to me it's worth it because by a year's time I will be far away from here and boxing means more to me than what any man thinks.

          If you want to go far in boxing then focus on boxing. Do wrestling if you can manage without practicing too much. My boxing gym also offers free wrestling to teens like me and I don't do it but it is a great strength workout so if you can find a gym or partner like that to practice at then that is great. How often do you practice boxing?

            5 days a week now for 1 hour, but soon I will be moving away to the city where I start at a new gym. There I can train 6 days a week with like 3 hours each day and only on saturday 1.5 hour. They give training on sunday too but I think I need one day off, might even go that day too if I think my body can handle it.

              Focus on boxing man forget judo or anything else. With accessibility to a quality gym that you can train at often you can get real good.

                  What is your background? If you haven't been training in some kind of sports I guarantee you're going to get burned out jumping into boxing 6 days a week, let alone judo. The #1 reason I see people fail at their athletic/fitness goals is pushing too hard and getting burnt out so be wise how you approach it. If you've already been involved heavily in sport, then going 6 days a week shouldn't be a big problem.

                  Training in another sport is great but judo is physically very taxing. That's no big deal for someone who is boxing 3 days a week for health but if you plan to make a career of boxing, you already have a huge, uphill battle ahead and are going to have to remove a lot of hindrances from your life.

                    Yes I have a sports background, I have been boxing from 15 year till I was 16 4 days a week. After that I started bodybuilding for 4 years like 6 days a week. Now I started boxing again 8 months ago and quit bodybuilding and have been training 4 till 5 times a week. But I made the decision to focus all my time on boxing and I will not add any judo or wrestling because I want to become a good boxer.
