  • Footwork, Keeping Eyes Open, and Ring IQ

So basically, I started boxing in September of last year at my university in Chicago. I've met a lot of great coaches and people since then. But now, I'm back at home in Texas. I am at a decent gym, but I'm worried I won't get all of the training in that I want to.

The things I feel I need to improve on the most are as follows:
    • Footwork
    • Keeping my eyes open when a punch is coming my way
    • Aggressiveness
    • Ring IQ

I feel that keeping my eyes open when a punch comes my way is the thing I need to work on the most. I know of some drills that will help but I don't always have a partner to do them with. If you guys could give me some things to work on while I'm at home alone as well, that would be great.

-keep eyes open, accept your going to get punched. Tell yourself, I Know I'm going to get punched, fck it, and remember your technique. Seriously, if your expect the ounch to hurt, it will, and youll overreact to it. If you accept it and tell yourself it's a big deal, you'll take it a lot better. Forme I would almost always start sparring by jabbing and letting my opponent punch my guard, just to feel his power and loosen up a bit.

-footwork, order those rubber bands that you tie to your ankles. Seriously, those things did wonders for my footwork, assuming you've already been taught proper technique.

-ring iq, honestly you just need to be in the ring, your technique isn't good enough to do what the better boxers do, so watching them won't help much, but you can watch for things like ring movement, angles, and look how a fighter like Bhop or Floyd gets off the ropes, things like that.

Aggressiveness, train aggressive, fight aggressive. You shouldn't worry about that as a newb though, your main goal Should be technique and conditioning.

I agree with Addix about keeping your eyes open, its a mental thing but some reflex drills might help you out as well.

As for footwork and ring IQ, jump rope in the ring and move around, switch feet, and bounce differently, theres no better way to know where you are at all times.

As for aggressiveness, go to the gym with blue balls. lol j/k IDK man, thats probably a mental thing too.
