  • Going to spar against 60lb heavier guy

    Hi,

    Next Saturday I'll be sparring against a guy who's apparently 220lb. I'm 158lb.

The only thing I know about him is that he's American (so maybe more aggressive than the Japanese guys I'm used to practising with), and 100kg (220lb).

If he's that heavy I'm expecting him to be on the fat side, so if he is (and not built like Anthony Joshua), I'm thinking I need to be quick and agile and he'll hopefully run out of steam.

Any advice? Has anyone been in a similar situation?

Also, I've been boxing for about 10 months now, and it wouldn't surprise me if he has much more experience.

You sound like its going to be a fight instead of working together!
If you have limited spar resources I suggest you sit down with this guy and figure what you can get out of each other before you spar.
If he has 60lbs and is older than he shouldn't be throwing power at you and you don't need to run all over the ring.
Sparring the vast majority of the time is two men working with each other to gain conditioning, experience and knowledge!
As I suggest just talk with each other so you can benefit from each other.
talk about current condition and short term and long term goals.
Are their fights coming for both of you, what is your future!
Partnership is what a spar "partner" is all about!

My 2 cents for what they're worth:

Make sure your defense is on point. Keep your chin down, hands up and move your head.

The conventional thinking for fighting a bigger man is to move in, flurry, then move out quickly. Also show him lots of lateral movement with side steps. Mix in plenty of body shots to make him tire quicker especially if he's overweight.

That's a safe way to approach it.

But if you have pop it's fun to test how he reacts to your power. Throw hard to his head or torso and see if he can take it. Maybe he can't and you can switch to walking the bigger man down.

Ah, of course! Thanks for reminding me. I'll admit I was going into this thinking I don't want to "lose", but we're working together to help one another!

Having said that, approaching it like as if it's my biggest fight so far is very motivating, and I want to make sure I'm at my best for it.

Thanks a lot! We'll see how it goes. It'll be interesting because so far it's always been me who's the more aggressive fighter and always trying to corner my opponent, so this sparring session might be the opposite.

You don't realise it yet but you have a huge advantage in speed, if you can let those hands go while rollin' around him than it's ice cream and cake. If you plant at all this guy will be there delivering bombs that will damage you to your core. Don't stand for none of it. Let your shots go and then disengage.

all speed my man, let them go and then use your eyes.........

Plain and simple man, dont do it. There are weight classes for a reason.

This sounds quite bizzare to me. What kind of coach organises a spar between two guys who are 60lbs apart in weight?

My advice is to move gyms lol.

But if you insist on getting in there, move, move, move. move around him and attack from angles. one or two shots and get out of there. dont walk straight in. dont walk back to the ropes. Hands up and move your head.

But in any case, if this coach isnt completely ******ed (which it sounds like he is) then the bigger guy should be working with you and not throwing anything heavy at all. Not at all.

I think the only reason why they've paired me up with him is because everyone else is much lighter than me. I don't know why this is happening but I'm going to ask.

Wtf, turns out it was either a joke or a mistake. Pretty annoyed about it.
