  • How can you reduce flinching?

Is the only way to cut down on it to get used to taking punches?

My trainer after seeing me gas out due to nerves for the umpteenth time took me aside and said he was going to punch at me for five rounds and I wasn't able to hit back just focus on defense! But what he did was start off showing me exactly how to block and started really slow. He was close to me and these were short range punches so I had to get used to being under pressure and moving and blocking.

After about three rounds or so (was exhausting!!) I was blocking most shots and also able to think about what was around me/my footwork instead of freezing. By the end of the fifth I was a less nervous and felt a bit more relaxed sparring.

Its not much fun but it really helped me a lot and I get other participants to do it to me occasionally.

Tell yourself your going to get hit and just accept it.

Seriously, it sounds too basic, but tests all there is to it. You want to box, your going to get hit.

Breath, trust your technique & conditioning. If your training is good you'll be fine.

Everyone goes through it so don't feel like your being "weak". Let your next opponent punch your guard for a round or two. Youlll realize it's not that bad.
