Honestly I was taught/told never to extend your punches while shadow boxing but Ive heard lots of contradicting things on these forums from guys way more knowledgeable than I so whatever works for you I think is the best motto I go by now.
As far as stretching, I know it has great benefits to help tightness/soreness and injury prevention but my knowledge or stretching isnt to vast nor do I stretch to much myself. Personally I only train little kids/young teens so weight lifting is out of the question but I wouldnt recommend it to an adult pro or amateur. I recommend resistance bands which improves speed and will help I think more so with extending your punches.
As far as running brother, you have to get outside man. Gym cardio machines are good/great for your daily gym goer but come nowhere to replacing roadwork. I would suggest finding a local High School track, most modern schools have that spongy turf that is awesome on the joints. Swimming laps will also help and will improve your extension on your punches too. Also one last thing, please tell me you jump rope... haha
