  • Advice on Boxing Gloves

    Hi all,
I am new to this forum and this industry so please be patient.

My younger cousin has decided to take up boxing and has not told any of his family. He's approached me to help him on his new venture.
I know nothing about boxing apart from the usual general stuff.

Anyway I want to buy him a pair of gloves and I have been looking online and the prices vary quite a bit. I do not know what to get and what size.
I've seen some that look identical but the prices different and the oz is different. What oz would he need?

Would you recommend getting training gloves, or just a pair of normal gloves, is there a difference?

The ones i've seen on eBay are made by Voco Sports, I've never heard of them actually I haven't heard of any of them apart from Everlast? Does having a branded pair mean they are better or last longer?

The ones I have seen are: eBay item number:111848388130

    Thanks for your help

    Don't use Amazon or Ebay.

Use either Title Boxing or Ringside for the most part. They are streamlined and well organized, it'll reduce the confusion for those who don't know what to buy. Title I believe also has a live chat if you need more direction.

Otherwise as far as size goes, I'm assuming he's looking for bag gloves, not sparring. Bag gloves are used for mitts, heavy bag, double-end, etc. The oz's often times affect the size of the hand compartment

    The rule of thumb:
    12 oz - small
    14 oz - medium
    16 oz - large

Agreed about going with Title or Ringside. There is some sketchy, unsafe shyt being sold on eBay. 16oz is standard for starting out but go w/ 14 if he's small. Once he gets his basics down, he can decide if he's comfortable using a slightly lighter glove. $50 gets you a decent glove these days. $30 options are ok if you just want to see if he'll keep it up for more than a couple weeks. Getting into the $75 to $125 range buys you something pretty nice with good protection and longevity. Just be careful not to buy "foo foo" gloves that are overpriced because of a name or design. Stick with an established brand at first.

Having a trainer in the first few months is HUGELY beneficial. It will keep him from hurting himself and from developing bad habits (which he WILL do without a trainer).

Get him a pair of mexican handwraps if he doesn't have any already.
