i still think its really hard to answer this since you said "if u could only throw one type of jab"... it always varies..

I can't believe I have to say that you should make sure you shoot it straight as well. I notice a lot of people especially beginners have an upwards trajectory at the end of their jab.
The only exception being unless you are shadow boxing/sparring a really tall mf'er where you have no choice, but to punch slightly upwards, but it should be thrown parallel from the shoulders generally. LIGHT push off the back foot when throwing it is all you need. You really don't need a giant step off the back foot either.
These days when I snap it out sometimes I like I'm a karate master catching the falling leaves or something. The jab is my best punch by far. Such a sick punchLast edited by Biolink; 08-22-2015, 01:41 AM.

Most of how I would explain has already been touched on in this thread.
Only difference is I wouldn't take a STEP out of habit when you throw it. You don't want to compromise your position every time you throw a punch (never do anything out of habit). I utilize a more rocking method. Granted, I keep my leg a bit straighter so when rock off my back leg, my front leg works as a shock absorber which in turn creates whiplash effect out the end my arm/jab. Basically the momentum generated off my back foot stops at my lead leg but pushes on through my arm, all the while my body maintains the position.
