  • Can you get a collapsed lung from a body shot?

I just started sparring a couple of weeks ago and took a shot to the lower rib area. Its been aching ever since and has made it difficult to run, but I still push it. The other day I sparred again and the guy hit it right on the button just when the aching was starting to go away. Now I can't really sleep because my left lung flares up whenever I try to roll over. I can lie on my back and the pain will eventually subside enough to sleep, but when I try to move its pure pain. Last night I couldn't even get to sleep on my back and had to really do what I could to block the pain out to finally get some rest. So today I did some research and wondered if it might be a collapsed lung? I can't inhale all the way and it feels like there is a balloon in my left lung that needs to be popped to make room for more air. And the wonderful feeling of being shanked in the armpit it all too present. So, I was wondering if some of you veterans had any advice on this because I am still going to try to do some training, just no sparring for a bit. Will it go away on its own?

Yeah after a hard sparring session I woke up at about 5am gasping for air. It was like I was winded only there was an extremely sharp pain if I tried to breath at all.

I felt like I was about to die, so I got my clothes on, went to the kitchen and ate a banana. Didn't help. Got in the car and went to the emergency room, I thought I was gonna pass out and wreck into a tree.

Got there, 8 hours of tests later I got a "sorry, everything's fine you can go home" while I was in absolute agony laying on the bed. Went home, went away over the worst 3 days of my life, I lived.

            Go see a doctor.

I love that movie. And yeah, its definitely a hard way to learn not to flare my elbows out. I guess I will go to the doc. I was just wondering if it were possible to tough my way through it is all.

There's 2 things you don't try to tough your way through.

                    Heart problems and breathing problems.
