  • Making speed bag useful

I've noticed many people find the speed bag to be useless, and then there's others who believe it is essential. Aside from the basic use, hand eye coordination, rhythm etc I would like to use this thread for anyone to add different things to do on the speed bag that are actually useful in terms of boxing. Freddie Roach has said it is the best tool to perfect the short left hook, and some say it is great for defense and counter punching as well, so if anyone can explain or provide some videos of different ways to get the most out of the bag I think it can help a few people out.

If you want to be able to simply hold your hands up when deep in a bout than I recommend working it regularly. A speed bag is not going to think for you, making a speed bag useful? Use your head man.......To the people who say that a speed bag is useless I just say that you don't know **** 'bout no boxin'.

For defense and countering I'd take the double ended bag over the speed bag, hand eye coordination too. You can do the speed bag blind folded.

Rockin- I'm not saying it's useless. I know the regular way serves a purpose, but there is much more you can do with a speed bag that many people don't know about. For those who do know input would be nice. I can't post links yet, but Freddie Roach has a good video on you tube on which he shows how to use the speed bag for left hooks and he believes it is the best tool for perfecting left hooks. It's not something everyone knows and I'm sure there is more gems out there that can be useful

Most use the same height (chin high) all the time and usually peanut bag!
Try using different hights and find the bigger bags too!
You'll get an arm and shoulder workout that will explain what kind of shape your arms, shoulders and back are in.
Then theres moving 360 on the bag, get your steps down as your hands work and finish with a "finishing punch"!
You can "mute" the bag on the platform then restart, work doubles and get a great workout!

Same ol' same ol' gives you nothing, mix it up and work at new setting and moves!
