I know people are gonna say use the uppercut but it wont work so well because you leave yourself quite exposed with the uppercut, and leaning in top of the head first extends the range of your punches so the uppercut may not have the reach e.g. if they are leaning in head first with a cross, and you are more vulnerable to the overhand than he is to the uppercut its a bad trade imo . Also the glove is protecting the chin and the chin is still tucked when he leans in so the uppercut at best will get the face, no big deal.
I know others will say foot work ie they are off balance so make them more off balnce or get out the way and counter as they are trying to regain balance, but the way Hopkins does it means he rarely looses balance because hes head first is a fairly subtle way and regaining any balance is fast, he also often ties them up and scores a free headbutt as he does this.
I just think its a brilliant strategy especially against or for southpaws to use. How do you counter it?
I think id use pivot hooks and pivot uppercuts like that Cuban boxer does, then pepper them with jabs as they try to regain balance and turn towards you.
