  • Trouble Forming a Proper Fist

When I form a fist, my lower finger joints stick out well in front of my knuckles. If I strike with this, the finger joints always impact first. I have asked my instructor about this and he inspected my fist forming and said that I was not doing anything wrong. I seem to be physically unable to tuck my index finger in properly so that my knuckles hit first. This is what my fist looks like:

If I press my index fingers together, I cannot get the top of my hands into a horizontal line. The knuckle joints don't bend enough.

My question is: is there anything I can do about this? Can I "train" my hands to make a proper fist by making the index fingers bend properly without injuring myself? Or should I just stick to palm strikes?

What you are saying is not true. Human beings are not all physically identical.

I asked several people who do no boxing or fighting of any kind to form a fist, and they could easily make a right angle between the top of their hands and the first joint of each finger, forming a fist that would impact knuckles first, or at least with a flat surface that includes knuckles.

I cannot do this. My index finger just will not bend in enough. My other fingers seem to be okay, though. I would show you the pictures if the forum would let me.

I was wondering in what angle do you form your fist? Is the back of your hand in a straight line with the rest of your arm? The higher you turn your hand away from your palms, the more the finger joints will stick out...

Facade, I have been told to keep the back of my hand in a straight line with the top of my arm. That is how I am doing it, though the protrusion of my finger joints is so marked that changing the angle of my hand doesn't make much of a difference.

I will try to make some more posts so I can post my photos.

You have some really delicate looking hands and your nails look impeccable. There's your problem. Well maybe not the nail part but yeah you have woman hands.

Your hands look normal and your fist is normal. So many crazy kids on here want to second guess their coaches its insane. Everyone wants to think they're special and that's the reason they can't perform properly. You're not special, you're just another noob who hasn't figured out proper technique yet. Do what Rockin said. One day you will land flush on your knuckles consistently and laugh at this thread.
