  • Ab routine with back issues

i used to have a killer ab routine, but since i developed lower back problems i cant do the things i used to anymore. i have a crooked spine and im quite tall causing me to bend my back a lot. i have recently started avoiding this but the damage has already been done.

lower back problems are very common so i reckon there has to be someone here with similar issues, if so how did you go about getting your work in? if im doing sit ups my back is killing me before i even start to feel it in my abs, even if i straighten out my upper body entirely. cant do russian twists to save my life either.

im using the ab wheel and doing leg lifts atm but i have to add something to that for sure.

I'm 6ft5 and had the same problem try strengthening your lower back. I do a lot of the leg lift excercises too aswell as planks. Don't overtrain and also try to get a lot of rest

i have been working out my lower back a bit but i reckon i should step it up and really develop that part of my body now that ive been hurting there. come to think of it i have done planks since my issues started and it didnt hurt, must have just forgot about it. thats going in the routine for sure. thanks, man.

Check out the Power Wheel @ lifelineusa.com. It's not your average ab wheel!

I think the best bet is just to ask your doctor, or (as a second best) a professional instructor.

I have no idea if this thing will work, but a device like the Kettler AB Roller looks like it gives plenty of back support during your workout, although I doubt if your exercise will actually have any effect.

I used to be an ex personal trainer, and lower back issues can effect more then just your simple ab workouts if you don't get them checked. Honestly dude, go to a physiotherapist and get it checked out ASAP so it dosent develop into anything chronic. From there on I suggest slowly training your lower back as it is essential to any exercise movement. Train with a powerlifting style deadlift routine and throw in some Romanian deadlifts and your lower back, core legs and all round body will develop as well.

However if you must train abs with little back pressure, I suggest these. Regular planks sucking your belly button in, hanging leg raises, lying leg raises which focus on your core and inner abs (head off the floor and make sure your lower back never leaves the ground). If done with proper form you should feel little pressure on your lower back.

Use that big rubber blue ball.

                  Problem solved.

The back problems fro, doing crunches over and over happen because of the amount of pressure you put on your spine when you do them on a hard surface.

Also, do more core work instead of crunches. Use the cords, do planks, medicine ball.
