I have half protein shake before and half after workout no matter what type of training I'm doing. Getting it in that fast after training has stopped me having any aches in my muscles the next day and I'm able to return to weight-training the same muscles within 2 days.
Plus I can't really afford to have the best diet at the minute and also yeah its fantastic for convenience. Means I get all the protein straight in after workout without having to spend time travelling home and then cooking something up.
Edit: maybe best not to have as much as half a shake before workout because there is a high posibility of spewing if you're doing high intensity cardio

Protein is highly essential for growth, recovery and maintainence. Your body needs fuel at all times and you have to keep the tank full. I take 1 gram of protein per body pound. Seafood is a great source of natural protein.

f#ck no. protein shakes can't hold a candle to a balanced diet of whole foods.
i haven't taken protein in years. it used to f#ck with my digestion something awful. that stuff isn't even food.

not talking about organic of course.
eggs, vegetables, legumes, fruit, seeds are relatively inexpensive.

i disagree. fresh, quality veggies, fruits, nuts and seeds, are expensive compared to packaged and processed foods.
i know i pony up extra dough for the goods.

For overall health, how healthy you eat does matter obviously. Protein shakes aren't inherently unhealthy either.

As long as you eat enough calories(enough of which are carbs) and protein you will do just fine performance wise. Protein shakes definitely are food since they're extracts from food, typically from milk and eggs. Milk protein is milk protein whether it's in milk or made into a powder.
