Recently added a 100lb heavy bag to my workout. I am not looking to be a competitive boxer, but rather add great workouts to my routine. I usually do 4 or 5, 3 minute rounds where I just hit the bag. I am using gel hand wraps and 16 oz gloves. After each session my hands and wrists are really sore. Currently only using the bag once a week. Is this something that will get better in time or am I doing something wrong. I try to be aware of my technique during each session, but I throw a lot of punches. This is strictly a "crossfit" type of workout for me. Any advice or suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

u are much too powerful, u must hold back ur power and intensity... u may cause permanent chronic damage... in the wise words of rockin...

if ur wrists are straight and hands wrapped correctly, yu should feel the stress a lot less over time .

Maybe I am punching too hard. Just trying to get the most strength and conditioning from each workout. Maybe less will be more.

My experience with the 'boxing as fitness' group is limited. I have stopped by the local Pink Gloves (for women) and Black Gloves (for men) gyms a few times...I am suprised that they aren't all nursing really sore hands and arms. They are teaching a way of punching that is designed to be a strenuous work-out.
While being in top condition is a big plus in boxing, the intent is to conserve energy, to make effective use of it's expenditure. If that makes sense? That is why a guy like James Toney can go ten when he looks like a weeble, or Archie Moore can fight to 50.
I would sit down and look at the way you are punching, where you are drawing your technique from. And maybe your bag is too heavy.

Make sure hand wraps are not too tight! Be sure your fist is comfortable inside the glove when your fists are closed! Pronate your punches, your straight jab and right hand should have your wrists facing the floor. Your left hook to the head should have your wrists facing down and the punch should be short in distance. No side punching were your wrists are turned inward and your punches need to be landing when your arm remains an angle not a fully extended arm when impacted. The fact that your not competitive has nothing to do with training with improper techniques!

If your not being trained by a real boxing trainer chances are your not using correct techniques. Hand injuries are for life, you better get this sorted out before you cause permanent damage.
            Ray.
