Going barefoot is better than fighting with socks hahahahahaha. I've forgotten my shoes a couple of times and looked at my socks afterwards and they got torn from the friction of the body rotations.

Anyway shoes would help you subtly as far as being more firm on the ground than just having socks. Being barefoot you have to watch out not to slip on any surface that's slippery, so it really depends on the floor material too that you're boxing in. If it's in the ring, I'd recommend boxing shoes just so you get more grip on the floor and don't slip. Simple as that.

Now as far as your smaller, more aggressive opponent, keep your distance and keep forcing your jab on him. It's your best friend in those situations, especially since you're still new to the sport. Make sure to always be light on your feet and make sure to keep your hands up at all time. If you don't have enough experience, chances are your dodging skills aren't to their best yet and might end up getting punched, so definitely keep your hands up. Knowing that you're new, the earlier you start to keep your hands up now, the less of a problem you'll have to keep reminding yourself in the future because it can become a bad habit, and a really bad one at that.
