Why do so few fighters include the jab to the body as a key part of their arsenal?

Ruddock didn't start out too bad but as the round went on it looks like he either gassed out or was just confused by Lewis.

He slowed down quick and looked hesitant to snap out his jab on that last one.

And throwing in a few feints in between would be a brilliant idea.

Lewis had Ruddocks timing down real quick, once you allow that to happen things can get tough real fast. Feints.

As far as a counter left hook catching you while shooting the jab to the body..... if you follow with a quick turn over/double jab then your jab will get there before his hook. Your right hand should already be in place to block it or a jab automatically.

There is a learning process with every punch. Dismiss the skill of jabbing to the body and you'll be throwing away a little piece of gold.............. Rockin'

Doing jabs to the body is always a must if your skill level is really up to par with the likes of Mayweather. The reason why he's so good at jabs at the body is because of timing and preparation. Preparation for timing of punches is due mostly by focus mits. If you ever see Mayweather work on the mits, you'll see how second nature it becomes for him to work on timing and defense, and the rest of his skills get improved as a consequence. The most important training for combinations is with the mits, especially precision of.... yes timing. And if you work on combinations most of the time at the gym, chances are, your punches to whatever you work on the most will improve dramatically even if it's just a punch and not a flurry of combination.

If you want to improve your speed btw, it's by improving your blood circulation to increase the fluidity of your movements. So stretch and relax and let your punches fly high like you're on some good **** smoking.

A bit OT but I gotta say this. I'm surprised Ward would say something as ignorant as, Floyd "originated the jab to the stomach" because he always comes across as a very intelligent guy and a student of boxing's history.

Not in the video jas posted, but in this one. Go to 3:23

Great video nonetheless, the comment just bothers me since the jab to the stomach has been around for possibly a century, if not more.

No idea, I put it to good use. I love fighters with limited arsenals. Easy work.

Two fights came to mind when I read this:

                    1) Mayweather v Mosley(Round 2): Mosley set the first of those two big right hands he landed with a jab to the body.
                    2) Broner v Maidana(Rounds 1-2): I remember Malignaggi was talking about how Chino set up the left hook knockdown by spending the first round and a half jabbing to the body, getting Broner comfortable with that and then moving up and turning it into a hook halfway through the motion to catch Broner by surprise.

I like using the Jab to the body just for different variations so its not always targeted for the head mixing it up head and body can cause opponents problems and break their rhythm

Watch how Jose luis castillo does it he frequently went to the body with jabs and then he would feint with it and throw a left hook up top, so beautiful to watch
