For any of the novice guys out there you'd better get some 10oz gloves on in sparring when you get ready for your first fight!
Its a whole different game moving from 16s to fight size gloves!
I'm not just talking about feeling a punch the defense side is a huge difference!
    12oz...........112----119
    14oz........119 ----147--54
    16oz........154.....175
    16 & 18oz ...175---up

glove weight also has a lot to do with working on defense. Theres no reason to where huge gloves if a session is dedicated to defense! Use fight sized gloves on a fighter concentrating on D-skills!
If I'm running an "open session" between to equally talented guys and the heavier fighter does have more pop I expect him to use his brains when approaching the "heat" of the session. I also may slip a lighter glove on the guy giving weight away! I'm talking about a 135 against 154, again brains are the equalizer not glove weight!
    Ray.

It depends entirely on the design of the gloves i.e. the type of padding and it's distribution and their condition (obviously, new gloves offer better protection for your partner).

I have absolutely no issues letting our lads spar in 10oz AIBA approved competition gloves (i.e. Top Ten, Greenhill, Adidas, Everlast etc). All of them use high quality, shock reducing foam that is concentrated in the knuckle area.

There are plenty of 16oz gloves that have hardly any padding in the knuckle area and / or the padding as poor shock absorbing capability's, and do much more damage than the AIBA approved 10oz gloves.

I personally spar in 14oz Top Ten. I haven't seen any 16oz gloves on the market that offer the same protection for your sparring partner (other than the 16oz version of the same gloves).
