  • Which should I buy? Hanging heavy bag or free standing bag?

I'm looking to invest in a bag... I'm just undecided on whether I should get a hanging bag or a free standing bag?

I'm just looking for something to use while working out to mix it up a bit... I'm not getting in to boxing full-time of anything.

I checked out the local sporting store and they have a 100 lb everlast heavy bag for like $90 and a Wavemaster free standing bag for $100... I'm not sure what is the best to buy.

Any pros and cons of each? Also, if I was to go with the free standing... any suggestions of what I could place it on so it doesn't "scoot" around on the ground? Like a rubber mat or something?

Finally... eitiher way I am going to have to invest in some gloves of some sort... but I don't want to break the bank on them or anything. Just something reliable and inexpensive... do I need actual boxing gloves or just bag gloves? Do you recommend I get the gel gloves for underneath? Or should I just go with the wraps?

Thanks in advance... sorry for all the questions.

Thanks man. What about the gloves, etc?

I've got a place to hang the bag in the basement... while the brackets they sell at the stores be good enough to hold it up?

I've got a freestand, I DEFINETLY recommend a hanging one. You lose technique on a freestand, your jabs and right straights feel weaker which messes with your confidence and have a higher chance of injuries on it. I just use it now to throw haymakers so I can develop power since it's so heavy, other than that it's below average.

Finally... I will be hanging it in the basement, anything I should be careful about... any tips for hanging it?

put it in solid brick wall, and a decent hanging bracket, i had a crap one which snaped along the weld line, gloves- nice heavy padded "bag gloves", wraps-get some long ones with velcro fastening, although the velcro will run out after awhile but i find it best! O' and some decent tape if you must!

Back to the hanging heavy bag.....

Check out the qualities of the bag. Leather is best by far, then plastic, and last canvas. Get the best bag you can. Also, check out the resistance of the bag. Some are so damn hard you can seriously injure your hands or wrists if you punch all out. Others are too soft or light, so you don't get enough resistance. Some will settle, so the bottom is like granite and the top sags. I think the best are the wave bags, as they give more naturally like a real person, rather than just swinging around. The best thing is to go to a gym and check out the bags, so you know what not to get....
