  • Roy Jones says lead with the left hook not the jab!

    Why?

Because it naturally gets you out of the way of counters, ie it gets you off to the side, where as comming in with a jab or a cross gets you colliding head on with a counter jab or cross.

Also just because you arnt as fast as roy doesnt mean you cant use his idea. Because you can use a very fast very long ranged hook straight from the stance, you can use it as a set up for a cross or even another left hook (which explains why roy was so good at multiple hooks since he was leading with it all the time for starts so instead of jab hook he would be throwin x2 hooks).

I like Roys advice and ideas, its non text book yet it makes perfect logical sense.

What makes you think a long range hook is harder to counter than a jab? Have you ever actually tried any of the stuff you post?

Roy Jones in his prime could do whatever he wanted. But most of us don't have his natural talent. That being said, he is not a good role model if we want to learn boxing fundamentals!

I'm gonna try leading with an uppercut instead of a jab.

I don't know if this is a troll, but you'll get stuck with a stiff jab and it will stop you instantly a majority of the time. When people jab you more often than not step in and change levels putting you at an even better position is defense against a hook too.

the idea is the movement of the hook gets you out of the way of the jab or cross as you are stepping in and as you hit them, if you just stood their and lead with the left hook then yes its easier to counter than a jab but thats not wat he is advising

if it connects if it doesnt and you are stepping in, you run straight into a straight right counter,

DONT MOST INFIGHTERS SHORT RANGED FIGHTERS LEAD WITH A HOOK TO GET INSIDE FOR THIS REASON?

GUYS LIKE JOE FRAIZIER, TYSON, TUA, ETC

Of course a lead left hook (orthadox) can be a good punch. I wouldnt go lead with it all the time with it tho and definately dont forget about your jab.

Roy Jones got away with not using his jab because his speed. He threw lead straight rights almost as much as he he did lead left hooks. And he lead with both more than he did a jab.

A jab will give you more distance even in comparison to a long hook. And the jab will be quicker. If you throw to many lead left hooks and your opponent reads you, all he has to do is block with his right hand and counter with his own left hook. One of the most simple counters in the game.

I partially agree with Roy here, the lead left hook is a good punch, but i think his opinion is lop sided due to ho whe was able to get away with it so much because of his speed and super natural footwork.

                    Roy is doing it differently.

The block then counter left hook wouldnt work because youd be off to the side and out of harms way.

Also regarding speed, if you have a guy a fair amount slower than you then you can employ Roy Jones Jr tactics, you dont have to be the fastest guy in boxing history to use his tactics. Infact some of them dont require a speed advantage at all. People underrate Roys skill and unorthodox technique, because it not text book and because of his athleticism, but hes a bright guy and a master of his trade, dont underestimate RJJ in any way!
