  • I bruise easily!

So be gentle when you handle me... Im quite a defensive fighter because im very tall for my weight class so i tend to stay on the outside anyway but today my trainer told us to do some touch sparring im working my technique for a few rounds then i get put in with a polish dude who doesnt speak english and i dont think he gets the point of touch sparring.

anyway he catches me with a hook and it catches me on the eyebrow as were not in headguards and this dudes got those childrens 8oz gloves on i end up with abit of a grazed eye. Nothing to major but i got a reality check that i probably have that ricky hatton skin. Thanks god for the weak skin! Cool story huh!

Any ways to toughen skin or is it all genetics.

sparring, sleep, diet, staying away from booze, will all help the bruising and swelling. it's amazing what your face can get used to.

some guys just swell, bruise, and cut easily. some of it has to do with the skin, some with the bones underneath the skin.

wear headgear and make sure your opponents are using good sized gloves that aren't too heavily worn. grants, rivals, winning, are some of the gloves with a reputation for being light on your sparring partners.

and get some sunglasses. your polish friend don't speak great english, so he's probably gonna put more leather on you.

You have a trainer? He allows you to spar with an experienced fighter who wears fight sized gloves? The session is supposed to be "light" but the other guy "doesn't know this"! Your trainer is sending a message to you to buy in or get beat up! Or your a pain in the azz in the gym and their changing your name to Meat!
Wear head gear so the use of vaseline on your face isn't needed. Vaseline will soften your skin and you'll be prone to abrasions.

As for methods try to be more offensive you may get some respect!! Ray

I get black eyes easily. I find Arnica helps a bit.

He's a good trainer but the gyms usually crowded so he cant watch us all we wern't sparring in the ring everyone was outside the ring just improving their range and reflexes. The dudes not that experienced and it was the only shot he caught me with. The swellings actually gone down abit today. But yeah most dudes at our gym use the gloves that are there dont ask me why but this dude chose to use the smallest ones he could find when we were on the heavybags then the trainer told us to do some touch sparring and noone changed their gloves. Ill just have to hit him with something big next time as i was only jabbing and feinting.

Allowing sparring with 8 ounce bag gloves? The guy should be prosecuted and kicked out of the sport. That's simply idiotic and wreckless, and with no head gear on top of it all. I guess mouth pieces are optional in his gym aswell........... Rockin'

                  Sparring in 8oz "kid gloves"?
                  Sparring with no head gear?
Gym too crowded to where the trainer doesn't know who is sparring who?

                  Leave immediately.
