  • Need opinions on jab technique

    Hey guys,

Since I started boxing my coach always told me to rotate my shoulders and pivot my front foot when throwing a jab. When doing a step jab, still rotating my shoulders.

However today I went to another gym just to try it out and the guys over there told me to not rotate my shoulders and foot to have it faster and less predictable. Rotating shoulders was more like a ''power'' jab. Only to move my arm, nothing else.

My jab is my biggest weakness atm and I'm kinda lost. What are your opinions on this?

If this is true, when do I use the power jab and when do I use the ''speedy'' one?

Thanks guys this might improve my boxing alot since I'm having a little bit of trouble keeping a good distance between me and my oponent.

not really a purpose for a power jab...as long as its fast enough to catch your opponent off guard you will be able to set up other punches, which is what the jab is for anyways

      Thanks man.

Im also only a few months in my boxing career. I'm sparring in 2 days so I'll try the speed jab instead of the power jab to keep my oponent away. My sparring partners say that my biggest flaw is that my jab is slow so I'll work on that tomorrow and try it out.

Let me put it this way.... If you throw a speedy jab everytime your gonna get predictable. If you throw a power jab every time your gonna be predictable.

You cant throw it out at the same speed every time and expect to land nd you will actually find yourself getting countered.

You want a mix of feints, speedy jabs and power jabs. To the body and head. So many ways you can mix this up and be unpredictable.

Do you have a good jab on the heavy bag? Like umph behind it when you want umph and speed when you want speed.

Is unlikely the jab will knock someone out but that doesnt mean you cant put a little extra on it sometimes to frustrate your opponent. Its not fun to get tagged with and will do damage.

Touch them with it a few times and then pop them with a solid one every now and then. Feint (fake) with it sometimes double it up at other times. Touch them with a speedy jab and double that up with a stiff jab. etc, etc, etc.

As simple as the jab seems dont expect to just magically obtain the ability to go into the gym one day and start working the jab. Alot of things about boxing seem simple theory but in practice (Sparring, fighting) are mind blowing.

Your gonna have to put in work in the ring, get the feel of it and get comfortable.
