  • Do you aim for the chin or do you just try to land on the face

Personally I always try to hit people on the chin when I throw punches to the head but a lotta people I know seem to not care where they land as long as they land them.

Well I'm still trying to get the hang of actually hitting the other guy!

But it depends - sometimes with the jab I go for inbetween the eyes to blind for a split second, with the hook I often go for the ear/temple area as it's more accessible than the chin. Right straight usually goes to the chin. And uppercut.

But the only guy I spar with is my trainer who's an ex-pro so it's not like he's walking around with his chin in the air! So it's very unavailable most of the time. I'm still at the stage when I'm jubilant to actually land a clean hit on his head cos he's a bit slippery with that head movement. Also he employs a cross block sometimes so my only real target from that is over the top to the eye socket or top side of the head i.e. temple. I'm also taller than him so usually I find it's more the top half of his head that's presenting itself.

Personally I find getting smacked around the ear or temple or just below the ear pretty distressing - especially when it makes your ear ring. So I guess it's not too bad a place to go for when the chin is just so tucked in you can't get to it.

I guess if I was sparring another beginner, which I might do then his chin may be more available due to bad technique, who knows? If I had a guy my height who didn't have such good tucking in technique it may be far more do-able.

Yeah behind the ear is supposed to be another button aside from the chin

According to, apart from anyone else, Elwyn Hall (Karate) - it's that place where your jaw hinges off, just below the ear. and then the "knockout line" follows from there along the jaw to the point of the jaw.

        Yes, here it is -

He seems to draw a line from just below the ear to the point of the jaw.

Not a "boxing" example I know but still relevant.

          Punching accuracy is pretty important.
