  • No trainer, no gym, want to compete

A gym and a trainer aren't options for me. The closest of either is 2.5 hours away. What do I need to do to compete? I have a speed, striking and heavy bag but Ive never boxed before and I know I have no technique so how do I get ready? I assume I compete the USABoxing membership application and get my book but how do I get a match ? Thanks a bunch. And, please, before those of you start the, "you'll lose", "youll never make it" crap, go somewhere else. I was paralyzed for over a year during service with the USMC and I would "never be able to use my hands again", 3 years later I was accepted back into the Marine Corps as an Officer Candidate. I also, "would never amount to much", 5 mos ago I was homeless and rationing 4 saltine crackers a day for 2 weeks. Today I own a corporate entity and Im working on my MBA. DONT bring that "cant" and "never" crap around me. Thanks.

you need a drill and sparring partner 100%
A drill partner could be your mom/dad /friends, so they can help you learning the defence at least.

You need sparring to get your timing and reactions, to get experience in a fight situation, to learn to relax in the ring. There isn't really any other way.

Ray, I've been looking for employment in order to do that. I know that once I complete my MBA I will be able to move to where I can find a gym but, for the time being, I am already 30 years old so I don't want to wait around another 2 years. I've even considered starting a local gym but Im not sure someone like me can do that. How would that work? Would I have to find a full time trainer to work there or would trainer leave their info so that members could contact them and use my gym? Or do I just need to leave that alone. Moving may be an option in 2 years but for now it isn't. I am also divorced and moving would mean I am moving at least another 2 hours away from my son, for a total of 4 hours. Thanks for the other replies, I may be able to find some sparring partners. I will definitely be able to do that before I find a gym, so it is progress. Any advice from anyone on opening a local gym? Videos, books, for technique? I know a trainer will be better but that isn't an option so are there any other means to develop my technique and skills other than that.

Something else I would like to say. I want to go as far as I can go, of course. But what has really peaked my desire to box is not that I want to go out there and beat the guy in front of me in the ring but find out what and who I am. In a way it seems like boxing is more of a fight against yourself than the other guy in the ring. Because of my past I have no idea who I am and what I am made of. I am 30 years old and just now figuring out some of this. This isn't some off the wall hobby I want to do, this is something I need to do, for me.

Are there any other combat sport clubs near by? Kickboxing, Muay Thai, MMA etc. If so, it may be worth joining for now. At least you will have a place to train and some sparring partners.

              Good luck.

You need to start with the basics instead of just going and jumping right in the ring to start sparring. Start by drilling, drilling, drilling. Get some technique down first before you jump in and spar. If you don't have a coach try watching some youtube videos. Expertboxing has a good channel along with JT Van V. Also watch a lot of boxing and read a lot. Make yourself a workout and follow it. Don't just jump around and do different things every day. Get a routine going. Try to stay away from the heavy bag for a while. Get the technique down before you add resistance into it. You will get bad habits.

To walk into a safe situation being a green guy can be tricky! At your age I'd suggest trying to get some knowlege to start out sparring with some younger guys (15 to 18) who are experienced so that you have a chance to catch up to where their at in a years time. (if your any good) HA!
In yhis sport you crawl, walk, jog, run................get your azz kicked a little bit then make up your mind if you want to be a spar p[artner and help young guys along or go out and compete!
Your in a very tuff situation because of your geographic problem along with yoiur family (son) to consider.
Call your towns service branch that gives permits for functions like wrestling, circus, any sporting events. Ask them if they ever sanctioned (permit) a boxing event and if they know of anyone local that you can get in touch with. Also your library (internet) to search out a retired boxer that might be living in your town now.

Where are you? County (city) State. Ray

Firstly congratulations on turning your life around. it sounds like you've had it hard. Excellent turn around, just brilliant.

But about the boxing, your only real option as far as i can see is search for a local martial arts type club, and hope there may be some boxers there for you to practice with.

A lot of martial arts guys i know can also do a bit of boxing, so try going into a martial arts club. Get used to feeling what it's like to get hit and punched about. It may not be for you.

If it is, you may find there may be some guys there that could perhaps show you some basics and certain fundamentals of stance.

Your options do sound limited at the moment, so i'm just trying to help.
