  • Had my first sparring session today

    Hey guys,

    today I've had my first sparring session, 4 rounds against 3 different fighters. One amateur with 2 fights, another guy that had some muay thai experience and the other I didn't really know his experience.

    I've only had 3 hours of coaching yet over a month and a half time. But I practiced alot. I learned jab, cross, uppercut, basic footwork and some deffensive moves. I was by far the one with less experience so I expected to get my ass handed to me.

    I was surprised I didn't do too bad. I landed some nice shots and off course got hit for the first time, man it feels weird. I also got hit on the solar plexus and had to stop for 15 secs. Also realised I'm not in shape

    I'm a south paw. My coach told me to relax because I was always trying to go all in with combinations, that's why I was so dead tired (1-1-2-step to his right, few punches then get out (manny pacquiao fan haha)). So, next round, I start off slower, walk around, dodge, defend, throw some jabs but I NEVER EVER knew when to go in. basically I was defending and jabbing thats it. When he'd go all in on me I'd counter of course but I never knew when to initiate.

    Any tips?

    I am soo willing to improve, I wanna be a better fighter.

    Also, if anyone wanna share, what was your first sparring session like?

      In my first sparring session ever I punched this guy in his face and he punched me back in mine. It was certainly a brutal affair and you're welcome........... Rockin'

        ...3 hours of "coaching" and you spar? do you think your trainer wanted to show you that being in much better condition is vidal to be able to spar?

          I'm from Canada and I am 20 years old. Basically, On week days im 2 hours away from the boxing gym and my coach, and on weekends we train for one hour because i work 8hours a day and he has his personnal life. He shows me new techniques and i practice them for 1-2 weeks at a normal gym (im the only one boxing there) until we meet again. Because we have trouble meeting and he knows I am very dedicated to boxing, he asked me if I wanted to join a group of 3 other fighters and their trainer to add a training session during my weekend. I said yes without hesitation. Since theyre more advanced, today they offered me to spar at 50% power with them, and after a month and a half of training 6 days a week, man I was glad I could spar. Yes I do not have alot of coaching but I really practiced hard the few things I know and watch alot of boxing.

            I was in a similar boat not too long ago. You already acknowledge you need to get in better shape which might be what your coach wants you to focus on, but aside from road work what helped me most when I first started sparring was to record. Watch your opponents, as well as yourself see what situations were a problem for you and watch some of your favorite fighters and look for similar situations. Learn from them and when you get in the ring keep it in mind, and execute. When training picture yourself in these situations and train accordingly, different methods work for different people, but this worked for me and if boxing is something you think about constantly it's definitely worth a shot.

                If you feel comfortable sparring then go for it. Don't be so quick to engage though, try using the first minute and a half to feel your opponent out, after that get your timing down and establish your distance.

                    First thing yu do is fin your range then you go for the shots use ur jab to find ur range try throwing feints different combinations
