  • How to punch going backwards/on the retreat?

Ive heard alot of guys make out like this is a big deal in boxing.

Is there any particular way to do it?

For the front hook or the check hook it seems an easy punch to use going backwards you can start the punch before you start going back and go back as you are punching or pivoting, the cross it seems you have to plant the rear foot after the first step back, then punch. Sm goes for the push off jab plant the foot first then push forward with the leg. The arm jab can be done going backwards but with diminished power

What else do I need to know?

    (im southpaw btw)

I've copied and pasted this paragraph from ExpertBoxing because it won't let me post links but here is the 'leanback right hand'

"This is a really ugly punch but I’ve seen really tall guys do it successfully. What you do is throw a right hand like you normally would but instead of leaning forwards into it, you lean back as you throw your hip forward. So it’s like a normal right hand but you lean your chest and head back so your opponent can’t hit you. This makes your punch so much longer because your head is on the outside of the punch instead of on the inside. Floyd Mayweather does this a lot during his pull counters."

Also he states that the best fighter to watch for this is the Klitschkos. I take it you swap right hands for left as you're a southpaw

standard way is to step backwards with the same side leg like the hand you gonna throw (left leg - left hand, right leg- right hand) . This the classical way to throw punches going backwards

It' kinda complicated but here it is in 2 easy steps:
        1. step backwards
        2. throw punch while stepping backwards

        good luck.............. Rockin'

punching going backwards is all in the footwork, you can make it about speed and elusiveness or you can plant and pull the power with you. either way it's a good part of the fight to be sharp with this skill.
