  • Throat and chest burning during/after jogging

I'm just getting back into running so i can make my long awaited return to the boxing gym but im having some trouble breathing.

I'm finding after a short amount of time (no more than like 10mins) my throat and chest start burning like crazy and my mouth fills with saliva. So much that i have to stop to recover before i carry on.

Any ideas what it is/ how i can prevent it? Is it just something i need to push through (ie punishment for being a lazy **** for the last year)?

Its annoying because my legs and body aren't getting tired and my run just feels pointless atm.

    Thanks for any help

    1) You're out of practice.

    2) The weather is getting very cold.

    3) You're probably running at a higher intensity than you need to for returning to running.

Try and let these initial runs be at a conversational pace (where you could chat to a friend whilst running if necessary). That should deal with the throat and chest issues.

As for the saliva......have you ever noticed what your mouth starts doing just before you are sick? Similar issue with running.....its because your gut is not used to being bounced around continuously; its also made worse because when we are in oxygen debt blood is diverted away from those areas. Its why runners can get runners trots too.

Chill out on the intensity for a couple of weeks, but go out several times a week. Build up some base cardio and let your body adjust to the cold. By the time December comes, I doubt you'll have an issue at all.

What I wouldn't give to have my 20s again! The sky is the limit with where you can take your fitness.......

If it's due to weather, you can get one of those masks to put over your mouth. I do not recommend running in the cold without one, although Marvin Hagler seemed to pull it off just fine. Some sort of elastic for your knees might also be a good idea because the cold can screw up your joints pretty good.

Ditto the previous statements about running in cold weather. The air is thinner so it is a lot harder to get good deep breathes. I usually run 8-10 miles per session and curiously it did get a lot harder to run as it got colder and I'm not even out of practice(I don't use a mask or anything like that either). I know my stamina as far as running is pretty good, so it has to be the thinner cold air.

Cheers lads, yeah its definitely getting colder over here now. I know i can run in cold weather once im fit though cos ive played football my whole life (a winter sport). Hopefully i can just keep the intensity low for now and gradually get myself back on top shape!
