I NEVER REALLY LIFT WEIGHTS, WITHOUT THEM I HAVE ALOT OF POWER IN MY RIGHT HANDS, DECENT IN MY LEFTS...I MOSTLY USE FOR SPEED AND SETTING UP RIGHT PUNCHES. MY QUESTION IS WILL LIFTING DECREASE MY SPEED OR POWER. wHEN I WAS YOUNGER I LIFTED ALOT AS FAR AS LIFTING MAX. WEIGHT I WAS STRONGER. BUT I FEEL ALOT STRONGER JUST USING THE BAG, BODY WEIGHT EXERCISES...AND SMALL WEIGHTS, LIKE 10LB DUMBELLS

Ignoring your insane grammar..... yes you should lift. Everyone should lift. Hitting the heavu bag will never be a good replacement for heavy lifting

Lifting weights will make you slower (if you want to keep the arms strong for fighting purposes that is). Some trainers believe in weight lifting, others don't. Most recently, Bam Bam blamed lifting as the reason he couldn't throw more in the late rounds on the second Alvarado fight. I'd suggest to not lift as it tends to sore up the arm and makes you lose some of the flexibility and movement. Your body is telling you how it feels stronger, listen to it.

If you have like no muscle on you its not a bad idea to hit the weights just a bit but otherwise you're better off juat avoiding them.
Reasons not to lift heavy:
1) increased risk of injury. This is actually part of why Sugar Ray Leonard did so bad vs Hector Camacho (rip). He trained with weights for the first time in his life and injured his leg very badly but kept it on the low so that the fight wouldn't be called off.
2) makes you slower. More muscle means you got more that needs to be moved.
3) hurts your stamina. More muscle means more blood needs to be pumped by your heart, which makes regular actions and movements more demanding which will tire you out faster. Evander had issues because of this if I recall.
4) It actually will NOT make your punching power any stronger, or at least not by a significant amount. Punching is a SNAPPING motion that needs coordination more than almost anything. Most power comes from things like your technique, the bone density in your hands, explosiveness, and your weight class. Putting on a bunch of muscle mass won't help unless either u have none or manage to put it on while managing to maintain your speed. If you move up in weight I it CAN increase your power a bit in THAT sense, but everything else (esp speed) will usually suffer.
5)potential weight problems. If you put on enough mass you can put yourself in a different weight class with people who will most likely weigh as much as you do but naturally and not bc they put on muscle. It can also be harder to make weight for fights because you'll have more to cut down to.
You can use weights and still be ok ideally, but stick to exercises that help build explosiveness, and exercises using low weights and high reps.Last edited by HtotheZ; 11-04-2013, 03:01 PM.

You got guys like bradley and froch who lifts weights still has the stamina to throw 100 punches a round and is physically strong along with the will to break your mind.
Then you got guys like hearns who has stick legs but would lay you out in 1 bomb
Then you got cheeseburger eating cigar smoking haven't been for a run in 5 years james toney who does 12 rounds with ease.
Everyones different i suppose.
