  • What are ur thoughts of boxers being athletes when it comes to their weight

I mean, imagine a fighter didnt have to worry about his weight

He just fought natural rather than attempted to cut to the lightest weight category as possible if u know what i mean.

I hear a lot of fighters who say they killed themselves to make weight..come on u here it all the time..

and you see guys out there who re hydrate 10/15lbs

if you take a guy like tyson gay or gatlin for example...they just go and try get themselves in the best condition as possible and obviously weight loss will occur however they dont need to stop drinking water or skipping meals prior to their races.

how do u think a fighter will perform if he had the same mentality as other athletes such as a sprinter and a sprinter when it comes to just being in tip top shape no matter what the scales say?

The reason boxers kill themselves to make a weight is largely due to the advantages gained in refuelling post weigh in. A welterweight on the scales can turn into as much as a middleweight (or possibly even super middleweight) in the 24 plus hours before the fight. The old adage that a good big un beats a good little one is usually true in boxing.

Non heavyweights often have a walk around weight of 1.5-2 stone above their fight weight. Some even more.......

If a guy walks around at welterweight, gets into terrific athletic shape at welterweight and fights at welterweight..........there's every chance that he'll bump into someone rather larger and heavier on fight night. This works for a ring genius like Mayweather, who clearly beat the much heavier Alvarez on fight night, but it is rare to see a ring welterweight beating a ring middleweight!

In most cases fighters who drop a lot of weight in training camps have well paid nutritionists to help bring the weight off whilst a boxer improves their ring shape. Also for refuelling post weigh in sensibly.

As for comparisons with other sports such as running. I wouldn't ignore how much diet and weight watching is key to these disciplines too. Most runners, whether distance or sprinters will have an optimum race weight that will be carefully monitored throughout the season.

I take part in local distance running races......and to be honest my race weight is about 5 pounds lighter than my usual training weight and over an entire stone lighter than my natural walking around weight. Its a strict science trying to keep good hydration levels, avoiding putting on pounds in a taper before a race and being sloppy with mealtimes in the final fortnight before a race.
