Hi. I'm new to the forum and am looking for some advice. I started working the bags at the gym 4~5 days a week about 6 months ago. Since I just started I bought a pair of the old sporting goods store 12oz. $40 gloves. I need to move on to a better pair so I need some advice, best brands, size, etc. I'm 59 years old about 5'6" 145 lbs. and use 180" hand wraps so I don't want gloves that are too small, but I also don't want pillows. Any help would be appreciated.

Heavy Bag Training Gloves

You are going to get a lot of people telling you to use smaller gloves, for me a 16 oz glove is best. Bag gloves come in sizes not weight, depending on the size of your hand.
If you go to Titleboxing.com or Ringside.com, they have a great selection of "bag gloves". Gloves that are specifically made for hitting the heavy bag and nothing else.
There are a few different types of gloves.
#1 - Fight gloves, gloves made for a pro fight
#2 - Sparring gloves, gloves that are 16-20 oz and have more padding made to be easier in sparring.
#3 - Bag gloves, gloves that have stiffer padding, not made for sparring but are designed to protect the hand in hitting the bag.
#4 - Training gloves, gloves made for both sparring and hitting the bag but I don't like these gloves because they fall apart when hitting the bag after time.
Here's some bag gloves that are inexpensive, and are very good.

I've been using the TITLE GEL® Intense Bag Gloves for the last year or so and they've been a pretty good pair of gloves and offer good hand/wrist protection. I have the 12 oz gloves but they feel and look a little heavier.
