My trainer asks me if i am right handed or left i answer right so he starts teaching as an orthodox fighter but when i did karate i always fought in southpaw stance so i am very used to it. Are you 6 years old? Man up and make the decision for yourself, nobody here feels it when you get nailed while learning your skills in the ring, so do what's right for you......... Rockin'

Your trainer is dumb, most trainers are. This is the boxing world, not the physics world.
Ask him to tell you some southpaw specific combinations, if he dosnt know or tells you to just reverse orthadox combinations dont go back to that gym.
Keep your southpaw stance. No matter how much pressure he puts on you and he will.
The only time it may* be better to fight orthadox is if you are a very short, short limbed fighter that has to get inside alot, (I think Tyson was southpaw although that may be a myth) the reason being is its harder to get inside that lead leg when its mirrored stances, it tends to be a longer ranged affair. Having said that Pac man and other high level short infighting soupaws have made it to the elite.Last edited by AlexKid; 09-05-2013, 02:47 AM.

I'm all for open discussion with the lads I coach but if someone deliberately ignored my advice because they thought they knew better, then I simply wouldn't train them.

Educate me!
First, define what a "southpaw specific" combination is.
Then give me a couple of examples and explain WHY the combinations are "southpaw specific".
Looking forward to your response.

Here are some specific tactics and combos that work best when fighting opposite handed fighters:
Straight left hand stepping to the right.
This isn't a combo, but it's a money move for southpaws.
Left Whatever/Right Hook
Leading with the left sets up the right hook well for southpaws. The lead left for the southpaw works like a jab in a way. It draws attention, then the right hook comes out of the line of sight due to the angle/foot position.
Parrying the Jab with Lead Hand and jabbing over it
You see a lot of southpaws constantly tapping down the orthodox jab hand and jabbing over it. It's super effective and makes a lot a orthodox fighters stop throwing jabs all together.
