  • How much does the drive foward of the leg muscles contribute to the power of a punch

Like for me most of the power comes from the rotation of the hips.

But you will notice especially if you sit on your punches or throw the punch from a crouch (knees bent alot) thant the legs especially the claves and quads either assist the spin of the hips or resist the equal and opposite reaction of the rotational force.

So anyway as a rough % how much do the drive of the legs contribute to the power of the punch (in this case a straight right)

42.738%. Not an ounce more, not an ounce less.

A lot of power IMO comes from the legs. I always teach my fighters that boxing is a sport that is based on the waist down, not waist up.

Your footwork is the most important thing in the sport. Stepping with a nice, stiff jab can definitely increase the power behind it. What is most important is not taking big steps, one of the biggest mistakes most fighters make.

Leaping in, or stepping in with big steps, can make you off balanced, reaching, and open to counters.

There is a study published on this.

I think the researchers found that the leg were responsible for generating about 40%, the core about 35% and about 25% from the arms.

They also found that the more experienced boxer generated a higher percentage of their power from their legs and less from their arms compared to novices.

Don't quote me on the percentages; it was a long time since I read the study but the above is the gist of it.

        Have a google.

the leg supporting behing you is responsible for a great deal of the power.

if you don't have your leg powering forward behind you then you might aswell jump into the air to punch the guy, with nothing stabilizing for leverage behind you, the blow will have little power......... Rockin'

Just get up and throw straights and hooks with your power hand and vary how hard you dig your back foot into the ground with the punch....and you will quickly see how much that contributes to the power of the shot.

            I don't know the percentage.
