  • Which power mechanics do you get more power from? Try both!

In a modern boxing school they teach you to rotate the foot which then rotates the hips. They often say pretend you are grinding a ciggerette out with your foot to get those hips moving!

An old school boxer by the name of Jack Dempsey dosnt give you the advice of grinding out a ciggerette with your feet, he instead tells you to swirl your shoulders, one goes foward and one goes back in a circular motion, this gets your hips moving if done right, and supplies the power for your punch.

Try both and tell me which you think is more powerful!? Try on the heavy bag!

(keep arms and chest loose as possible for both)

    What did you find?

the foot behind you gives the punch leverage, if you start as dempsey said and fired every motion in perfect sequence and timing from the fist to the foot you will land a major blow.

if you set down on your back foot while firing it you will also find great power.

you better name me in the credits of your boxing book........... Rockin'

Alex, my advise is if you don't already have a coach, get one. If you already have a coach, get one with more experience. However continue to study your boxing

There is no question you are more knowledgeable here, but here are my 2 cent: for conditioning you need a coach 100%, somebody who will push with all means, but for the technique - better be student of the game yourself, it will pay off in the long run. I have trained in 10 gyms in Russia and Europe, not too many, but still I got one thing without doubt: none of the coaches were experts, there is nothing worse than a coach playing an "expert" and teaching you wrong stuff for years. When you fail, he will point you at yourself saying "I told you this and that, but you did not listen". So it is dangerous to trust in any unknown coach 100% (I am not talking here about the real top pro coaches)

How can the shoulders get the the hips moving?

Try it and find out for yourself!

The body has chain reactions of movement like with kinetic linking one part effects other parts, and certain movments we do in ordinary life are also wired up.

Of course, but the kinetic chain starts at the ground. I was being pedantic. Both techniques use the same muscles, starting at the ground, the difference is in the degree of hip rotation.

You may think that you are initiating the movement by "swirling your shoulders" which in turn moves the hips etc but this is not the case.

Regardless of what mental cue you use to initiate the punch ("swirling the shoulders / driving the hips) the movement of the shoulders is enabled by the feet providing a base for force production which has to start at the lower body (anchor), then core, which allows the shoulders to turn.

Your power has to start at the ground. What do your shoulders "push/pull" on to supply the power?

If you were hanging in the air in a harness, with your feet off the ground, could you generate force by swirling the shoulders? No, of course not because the ground is where the movement begins regardless of which technique you use.

Try it yourself. When you try to "swirl" just your shoulders, you will feel your lower body contract, then your core will rotate, then your shoulders will rotate. It can't happen any other way. The major difference being degree of hip rotation.
