  • advice regarding the technique of left hook

Whenever i throw my left hook, like pivot front foot then everything else follows my rear foot which was placed parallel directly to opponent shift a bit of an angle once i propel my hips into the punch it and weight is shifted to the back foot.
Is it a technical mistake or is it okay if my rear foot some changes a slight tilt.

Sure, i'll try, knew my explanation was difficult to explain.

Any how since i fight in a stance where my rear foot is pointing forward to my opponent. My rear foot's toe is placed beside my lead heel.

And when i throw my left hook as i pivot the lead foot, and shift my weight in the back foot. But as soon my hips rotates It kinda takes away my stance because my read foot isn't planted any more and it tilts a bit indirectly to my opponent.
What i'm saying is it technical mistake that i must get rid of or is it just completely natural in away.

Not much of a discussion thread i want to assesses this if anyone can kindly advice me so i can get back in the gym.

      Thanks in advance

Your stance itself is what's wrong.

Your feet shouldn't be on two parallel (imaginary) lines. You'll never have the potential to get full power on your rear hand and you're OFF-BALANCE when throwing your hook, that's why your back foot tilts awkwardly.

In boxing, you're pretty much working in a circle. So, if you were in sand with your front foot planted and pivoted 360 degrees, your back foot should have created a smooth circle around the "dot" your front foot made.

Your stance right now is only good for forward movement. Honestly, Mayweather often does that on his more deliberate right hands and they are all speed, low power.

Your back foot shouldn't have to move at all to throw the hook just like your front foot shouldn't have to move to throw the straight.

Watch Joe Louis for an idea of foot placement and leverage on punches.

Purecyse is correct. Your stance is all wrong.

However I notice a lot of people are trained to use that stance for some reason. A lot of mexicans I see being taught to stand like that. Not saying you're mexican, if you aren't, it's just that i ve noticed this amongst mexicans. (Pro-boxer example: Victor Ortiz)

I suppose if you want to keep that stance, you could widen your stance, placing your back foot wider. This would result in a square stance, which makes you a larger target but you wouldn't be throwing yourself off balance.

Otherwise, I would say focus on changing your stance first. Joe Louis is a good example like Purecysce mentioned. Any technical boxer is good to learn from tho. (Not slick boxers like whitaker etc)

Thank you guys for the comment but i'm going to prefer my stance.
              Coach's instruction.
I don't feel anything off balance infact what i'm trying to make my point is that i kinda get into that fighting stance your talking about with my rear feet not pointing forward. And i was wondering if anyone who fights at the stance knows is that a normal occurrence whenever throwing a mean left hook.Or is something i have to get rid of.

              But thanks for your advice.

Sounds as if your squared up and void of balance! Some fighters have success with squaring up but its usually when their opponents are backed up into the ropes! (ala Tyson) thats when a two handed hook attack can be effective however your balance in back of you is gone and your open for upper cuts unless your head movement follows your punch finishing closely!
Definetely not what I used to teach but it may work for you! Ray

Nothing wrong with the toe of your rear foot pointing towards your opponent, just kick that foot a little to your right, directly, not forward at all to maintain your balance. Keep your feet under your shoulders. Rotate the whole front leg inwards and you'll still be a narrow target.
When you hook, the weight goes initially onto the right leg; the muscles of the right side of the body initiate the turn. The turn of the left foot is in response to that. It does not propel it; it is not strong enough. In any event your right foot needs to move. The foot goes flat and the toe points off to your right.
