  • Whats the proper way to throw an overhand right?

    Is this how?

    What is a true overhand?

I see the right hook with a slip called an overhand alot but that isnt a proper overhand is it? Isnt that just a right hook with a slight downward angle?

Dosnt a proper overhand have to come down at least at a 45 degree angle?

Isnt a true overhand the opposite angle to an uppercut or bolo body punch? ie it comes directly down from directly above, ie it comes from 12 oclock to 6 oclock or 11 oclock to 5 oclock or almost directly down and you have to lean or drop to one side to be able to get that directly downwards angle?

Very confusing tool to learn because everyone seems to do it different and information on how its done is sparce!?

Also how do you get more range on this punch? Ive seen guys throw it almost like a straight right when they extend the range of this punch!

    So confusing!

Just imagine you are boxing an orthodox fighter and you are going to counter his jab with an overhand right, you are going to slightly loop that right hand over his jab while you are kind of leaning into it. Its not a straight right or a hook, its a kind of upward looping punch that you can get in if your opponent is showing a lazy left hand guard. The guy in the video does not have the best technique to imitate. Do you watch pro boxing? I cant really think of any examples off the top of my head, but you can find some beautiful over hand rights in alot of pro fights. Actually, look at my sig, Gennady Golovkin is throwing an overhand right.

Over the top punch depends on the opponents position! Theres no set way to throw it. By defenition it has a "hump" as opposed to being direct (straight)
A true overhand would be against an opponent that has alot of height thats when your steps need to be faster and go deeper and your rounding off shots that may "come around" and catch him!

rear hook===never heard of that terminology!

I'd suggest straight right hand to the body to set up left hooks! Ray

It was a hell of a punch indeed, but the view point was not nice to study the technique
