  • Any Advice In Preparing For Sparring?

At the end of last week, my coach said he wants me to start sparring on Monday, which is today.

Now this is not my first time sparring, I've sparred before in the same gym, but I've been away from the gym for a year and just came back on July 1st. Basically, I haven't been punched in over a year and was wondering what should I do to prepare myself for this. Should I do some light running today a few hours before I go to the gym, or should I relax until I go to the gym. I haven't sparred in a long time so I'm really excited.

How should I prepare myself mentally and physically?

For me I just like to relax and save my energy for the actual sparring and don't forget your gumshield

Eat a light but healthy meal 2-3 hours before sparring, you don't wanna be chowing down right burgers before sparring. You can do some jump roping/shadow boxing before to loosen up. And be relaxed but also focused at the same time and listen to your trainer. Good luck and have fun.

thanks for the advice guys, i wish i could say i performed well but thats just not the case

i was feeling winded midway through the 1st rd and i wasn't even throwing that much, his jab to the body took a lot out of me early on and by the 2nd rd i was just trying to make it to the bell, and he was turning up the heat and then realized i wasn't throwing back, everytime i threw back we would weave to his left to get away from my right and come back with a right hand

it was pretty bad, he got through my guard easily....i don't think its that his shots hurt me, it cuz i haven't sparred in over a year and i just came back to the gym 2 weeks ago, also i haven't been running as much as i should and my diet's been pretty terrible as of lately, so i've been cutting weight and it's taken away my strength too

i'm not giving up tho i just need to get use to getting punched again and get back into the shape i was in a year and a half ago

Who gives a ****, this should motivate you too keep going. Boxing isn't like riding a bicycle, if you don't do it a lot, you will get rusty.

Just keep at it, get in shape and apply what your coach teaches you. Take everything step by step and you will be fine. Don't be scared to get hit and step into the danger zone and let your hands go.

lay off or not you should be getting beat up in sparring every now and then, if you arent that just means you arent sparring good fighters.

sparring should be every day ****, prepare the way you would for any workout. make sure you get your sleep, rest and food at the right time and warm up properly. thats it. just put some added emphasis on warming up your neck and jaw, other than that its like any other workout.

i used to watch the older guys sparre as i waited, trying to pick up some things from their go. Some guys would rather be left to themselves, but ultimately it's what makes you feel confortable. I liked to be around the gym, on the double end bag shadowboxing whiile looking at the mirror and stuff. I spent hours infront of a mirror practicing form, that it became a way to calm myself, might sound kind of weird. Oh This is about 2hrs before it was my time.
