  • Should I give boxing a go?

Hey guys, i joined the forum and thought it would be good place to get some information/advice.

I'll start off by saying i'm from South Africa (but living in the UK now). Growing up there it is a really rough place so i've been in my fair share of street fights. I never actually stayed at a boxing club for long because of moving all the time. Out of the boxing clubs i went to all the coaches said i punch hard. Now i know boxing is not all about a hard punch...if you don't have good defense, speed, agility, technique, strength, stamina it doesn't mean much.

I just need some input on whether other people notice/think the same as what the coaches did. Here is a video of me punching the bag:

    youtube.com /watch?v=SUhKIoo8Y7U

It's not a video of me showing defense or anything like that, merely just messing around on the punch bag. Don't know if these factors matter but yeah: I'm 21, 5'11-6', and weigh around 155lbs (70-71kgs)

    Thanks

What is your problem? You want to be champ or just security issue? What are the goals?

Thanks for the reply, it's not a security issue, just wanted to know from other people that know a lot about boxing whether they think i have a decent punch and whether i am punching correctly (if yes at least i have something good to work off of). I intend on training to become boxing fit. I want to work on stamina, defense, strength..etc and then maybe after a few months of doing that go to a boxing club.

Also: What exercises can i do in the meantime with weights?

nobody walking in off the street knowsw how to punch correctly, they think that they do, but they don't. That's why they have trainers and what all of your first sessions and the shadowboxing is for. As for you already hitting hard, you will probably be humbled abit when you find that everyone (who competes) there hits hard. With proper technique you'll hit even harder..........Rockin'

Saw the video.... I think you'd benefit from joining a boxing gym, and going from there. Stop working the bag without gloves, or at the bare minimum wrapping your hands... you're going to injure your hands/wrist etc. Trust me, it sucks to be waiting weeks or months for a nagging sprain or worse to heal.

You're definately very raw, can't tell exactly from the video. If you hit hard now, you'll hit a lot harder once you learn how to get everything out of the punch, turning it over, transfering your weight, proper stance, etc.

Yes, you should give boxing a go, not because I think you're some kind of prodigy or diamond in the rough, but because you seem like you'll enjoy it, and who knows, maybe you'll excel. But you won't know if you don't try.

As others have said, wait until you get to a boxing gym before hitting the bag. You'll develop bad technique that will be much harder to correct.

Are you a fan of the sport?

Thank you guys for the replies, really appreciate it and will take them all in to consideration and will join a boxing gym as soon as i can.

D-MiZe: Yes i really enjoy watching boxing, it almost gives me some sort of adrenaline rush. My favorite boxer was probably Mike Tyson simply because of how aggressive he was.
I prefer watching the Light Heavyweight, Cruiserweight & Heavyweight fights the most, it's very fascinating.

Once again thanks for the replies.

someone who has never put on a pair of gloves can throw some punches at a heavybag. The vid demonstrates nothing. Should you take up the sport? that's up to you. Get to a gym and stick with it for a while and see if you enjoy it.
