  • sparring against heavier opponents

Is there any point to this besides getting a feel for heavier punches?

I'm 6'0 and walk around 145lbs. My coach matched me up with a guy who was a little shorter but carrying a lot more muscle(he said he weighed around 180). I was quicker and landed cleaner shots but his punches would knock me off balance and he started going full blast on me when I got cornered.

Within reason its good to get sparring with all different shapes and sizes of people being 6ft6 and 250lbs I'm almost always in with lighter/smaller people. Which is good and bad, so long as you see it as sparring and not a fight I can't see any reason why it wouldn't be good for you. If it starts getting scrappy and hes just pounding on you then ur probably wasting your time.

i used to spar big heavies all the time , im 10st 2 now but at the time i was no more than 10st lol , i must admit the shizzle was fun. never ever had trouble with them , if your fast enough then you shouldn't have a problem.......true story!

Sparring people bigger, BUT SLOWER than you is a hell of a lot easier than sparring people who are smaller BUT FASTER than you IMO. If they are both bigger and faster than you, then you have a problem lol.

Its good to learn to deal with guys bigger and stronger than you, especially if they have heavier punches. Also, its good to spar smaller faster guys.

However, most sparring related injuries I've seen have been a big guy vs a little guy.

It can be good if the larger opponent is willing to work with you a bit.

I was thrown in with much bigger men early on and I don't do it anymore I don't care what anybody says. I walk around at 140 and I'll spar a guy who weighs 160 or so, but I won't go past that.

i've always been doing this since there wasn't a large variety of people to spar with at the gym i went to, most of the guys were over 190 pounds

circle, jab, 1-2, clinch when they would corner you

I only recently started, but one of the guys who fights locally has a run and hug style that the coach thought woukdnt work very well against his upcoming opponent. So se put him in there with me and basically told me "dont let him clinch"
Every time he tried id just power out of it and throw a body shot or two. Basically his coach is just trying to get that hug reflex out of him. As ive said before i just started boxing and still havr my football lineman physique so it played perfectly that i was so much bigger than this cat to allow me to get out of his very practiced clinch. So id say yes, in my opinion sparring out of your weight class can have advantages.

Another example, the coach who helps me out put me against a 150 pound guy who was so fast his hands blurred, and told me to bob and weave past his punches... i think thats rather effective. It made ma have to focus 100% on technique because of his speed. I got pitter pattered i think a hundred times in a minute lol

the secret to fighting bigger people is simple....... punch the big guy in his nose and when he tries to punch you back...... move ........... Rockin'
