it all comes down to a question why one needs the speed-bag? My understanding at this point is that the speed bag helps primarily to condition your shoulders so that you will be able keep your hands up more easy during the fight. Any different views on that?

The only real benefit I see is shoulder endurance. Some say hand eye coordination but I don't see how that translates into an actual fight when you don't throw punches in the same motion as you hit the speed bag. You also aren't going to fight in such a consistent rhythm.

Hand eye coordination helps in every athletic ability. It can improve you're reaction time, accuracy and even technique if you use the bag properly.

It's not absolutely necessary but I think it has some benefits. Chavez Sr never even used it and he did ok.

I agree with Ray and Cua. The name says it all speed bag therefor hand speed, hand and eye coordination, shoulder muscles conditioning, helps keep hands up, keeps you active after fatigue from the rest of your work out, timing, plus much more
