  • How the hell do you slip?

I see pro boxers bending at the waist to slip as its fast. See Pernell Whitiker.

Ive been told by some to bend one leg so you move to the side. Like half duck. Instead of bending both legs you just bend one which naturally moves your head off to the side.

Ive been told by others its twisting the hips like a punch so your head moves to the side slightly as it does anyway with a normal punch.

Ive also seen Tyson bending sideways at the waist.

    Which way is the fastest?

Which way is best for a southpaw?

Which way is the proper way to slip?

Ive found the bending at the waist like Pernell no good because you cant follow up.

Ive found bending/dipping down on one leg too slow.

Ive found rotating the hips quite fast but as a southpaw that slips right alot it feels like if I was struck mid slip id add alot of power to their punch?

Lastly the Tyson side ways bend slip is a bit slow but you can still follow up it dosnt affect your hips at all! It also feels safe, its just a little bit slow.

I basically need to know how to slip right, and how to slip left then right or right then left one slip after another, and also how to slip right while throwing a straight left cross!?

The motion that you, as a southpaw, would make to slip to your right is essentially the same motion as throwing a straight left hand. The motion you would make to slip to your left is the same as throwing a right hook. When you slip the motion is sharp and violent, just like when you punch. You slip with your feet so you can punch with the slip.

So why would you ever choose NOT to throw a punch when you slip?

Dosnt the slip to the right as a southpaw (violently) add a ton of power to their shot if you are caught mid slip?

Also when I rotate my hips my head only moves to the side a TINY amount, it dosnt feel like enough to be safe, and if I exagerate the movement it slows the speed n power down.

Also if you are only meant to move your head a tiny amount why do the pros move it alot more? Also you can change the path of your punch mid flow easily to catch such a subtle slip, Eubbank used to make his cross come diagonally down as the guy tried to slip it and the slip failed. I rarely see exagerated huge head movements fail!?

        Thanks again btw grey!

Let me address your questions in order...
-It depends on what you are looking to land. I like (for orthodox fighters) the outside (right) slip and left hook counter; a punch with the slip. But slipping outside the jab and then coming back over the top with a right hand works well too. But the thing is, you have to set them up.
-Yes, but what is he going to hit you with? He jabs- I'm assuming that is the punch you are trying to slip?-and you slip outside it. There is nothing he can hit you with at that point. His left hand is out, arm extended and he cannot throw another punch until it comes back. And you are now outside his punching range, if that is the right word. That and being out of reach are the only 'safe' places in the ring, unless you know how to pull in close properly.
-You don't rotate ONLY your hips when you punch do you? You turn your shoulders and your head should move with your body if your are doing it right. Also, you only need to move your head a little bit- the width of a glove, give or take. If you move to much it takes you out of position. Watch guys like Napoles and how little he moved to make punches miss.
-A lot of what you see pro do, especially today, isn't the optimum way of doing things. A lot of it is done for a reason, to make the other guy think or do a particular thing; watch and evaluate in that context, of what he is thinking and what he is trying to make the other guy do. Everybody throws the right cross at a downward angle, or should. And you can't really change the flight of a punch enroute, not so much. This is all timing, you see? And you don't slip the end of a punch, you slip the length of it. Does that make sense?

Yes im rotating my shoulders but my head only moves about a gloves width maybe slightly less, just dosnt seem safe to cut it so fine/close! Just dosnt seem adequate for moving out of the way of anything!

I slip his right straight as well as his left jab, I was told to slip right while throwing a cross to counter anything!? Do you have to slip right for jabs and left for crosses always? Or is there no set rule?

            Thanks Grey!

Ale kid I feel you already know the answers to everything you're asking because every single thread you post you answer yourself with appropriate answers and even elaborate further on the subject as if you just posted the question so people can see your answers. You come off newbie when questioning and then as an experienced person when answering your very own questions. I apologize if its not intentional but that's just very strange.

If I were a southpaw I'd get real sharp at slipping to my right, off his jab, and shooting a straight left hand. And I'd get real good at sliding inside his left foot and slipping to my left- off his straight right- parrying the punch with my left hand while hooking with my right. Or slip it to your left and and bring the left uppercut to the liver.

Im an obsessive guy, that has to get it perfect, and despite knowing lots of details, I dont really know how to do it properly. Its really confusing because theres no 1 way to do anything! A slip is not a freaking slip, its not like here this is how to slip and everyone does it that way, its like different fighters and trainers have different ways to slip, to punch, etc. So its hard to learn if you want to get it optimal.
