I am not a pro boxer, so all I can answer is to quote the greatests, say Ali or Sugar Ray. According to them, it is not about what you think (because you may naturally doubt), it is all about what you believe in your heart.

“Champions aren´t made in the gyms. Champions are made from something they have deep inside them - a desire, a dream, a vision.” (Ali)

      - Be in great shape

      - Develop a style that best suits your physical abilities, limitations and mental temperament

      - Perfect that style

      - Test that style and your ability against progressively better competition via sparring first

      - Test yourself against different types of fighters.

      - Tweak your style to be effective and versatile against various styles BEFORE you leave the amateur ranks

By the time you turn pro, you should be some what comfortable fighting guys taller, shorter, faster, slower, more powerful, less powerful, pressure fighters, pure boxers, southpaws, orthodox fighters or whatever. Versatility is key to becoming an ELITE boxer. That takes a tremendous amount of time, mental fortitude and continuous focus on getting better. A lot of boxers (and really people in any profession) reach a certain level of proficiency, then they stop growing. They get some success and they keep trying to do that same thing over and over again instead of mastering one skill, technique, then looking to add another wrinkle to their game. That's why experience isn't always the best teacher. Some people have 2 years of growth based experience, and 20 years of fighting the same way over and over again and not learning and growing. Those types don't become elite because the never maximize their capability.

I've always thought there were certain physical qualities you just have to have though. Saying that its all about training is like saying that anyone can make it in the NBA or the NFL with the right amount of training. Don't you have to be built a certain way? By the way I know nothing at all about this and was wondering myself.
