  • Can somebody tell me if this is true or not about gaining punch power?

I have a friend who fights alot(he isn't a real boxer) he just fights in the streets all the time and has knocked several people out and sometimes soon as he hits the person once or twice they immediately stop fighting and just try to grab him(to avoid being hit anymore) He isn't too big he's 6 foot, 175 pounds, 21 years old. He told me his old therapist told him a secret to gaining punch power, all you do is stand in a doorway and put both fist against the door and push hard as you can for as long as you can and you just magically punch harder.

Is this true at all does that really work?

lol the therapist is trolling. Punching power only improves when you do exercises like fast squats, high rep-low weight lifting exercises (more cardio than weight lifting) and by practicing punching, getting used to using timing, momentum and technique. Pushing exercises - especially if they only involve your arms - don't help you gain punching power; just push strength. Punching requires burst strength.

You are not going to get stronger doing this but if you have no leverage in your punching form doing the excercise may teach you how to recruit your body better and use the ground for leverage and you may punch better as a result.

There is definitely some truth in it. I saw a contest on youtube about who hits hardest: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uib8t683la4 (in Russian)

so one of the best are in fact arm restlers, because, I believe of their ability to form strong power-line in the final phase of the punch. Answering your question, the static exercises in boxing are underrated. This is what essentially the doctor suggested: develop the ability to harden your muscles very hard just before the impact, so you will not rob yourself from power.

Punching power is like 60% genetic, 20% conditioning and 20% technique.

There's no trick to it, you either have it or you dont, theres a few things you can do, make yourself stronger and learn better technique, but you'll only make a small difference really
