  • How do you fight in the danger zone as a southpaw?

By danger zone I mean you should always aim to be on the outside of your opponents lead foot, so you are harder to be hit with a rear cross and easier to land a rear cross (the danger punch)

So southpaws are told to circle right or step right and to try and maintain this dominant advantagious position.

If you noticed pac mans most recent loss he was on the danger side when he got KOed by a huge right hand.

What I want to know is say your opponent has better footwork than you and is maintaning the advantagious position better than you can, how on earth do you box from this disadvataged position?

Also I noticed southpaws purposly circle the other way the wrong way (to the left to the inside) to confuse their opponents and work a different game.

Hows it done? How do you best box from the disadvantaged position?

Move into his right hand and then counter it with your right hook, or get under it and hit his body. It isn't a bad situation if you do it on purpose; you isolate and focus on his right hand.

I tried going southpaw once during sparring and got beat like it was my first day EVER in the gym.

90% of the southpaws my fighters have faced do not fight well backing up. (most fighters don't) Gaining outside position is what you try to do so you see how they react to it. Moving into their power (back hand) is done to see what their strengths are. While you doing this be carefull you don't get "beat up"! Now if the lefty gives up the outside position you should start your attacks just as if he's a conventional fighter. In that outside position the less thinking about him being a southpaw the better. The only times that changes is when your inside. Then you must be aware of feet postions and hand positions. If he squares up then theres no problem if he's a converted fighter he'll go back to being a righty 80% of the time when inside! Attacking with a double jab to cut down distances is smart so you don't wind up reaching. Most southpaws love to peak in then pull back and catch the righty peeking n!
The lead punches can be the straight right or left hook but that depends on what he's giving you. You have to determine which lead is the right one to use. Bottom line is your punching in combination anyways and your looking to back him up!
Moving to your right is a danger because your sliding into power and so many southpaws beat rights to the punch because its a big part of their training. Pacman does it with righties because he throws unconventional combos. He has his own style isn't in a southpaws stance as he gets closer to his opponents. I stress not to go right unless you've schooled yourself to the possibilities that can occur.

I personally fought 3 southpaws when I boxed and I had a good one in the gym to spar with and had things worked out and could never do a damn thing with that.......................MF'er hahaha!!! So the guys I fought were in a street fight with me. Screw boxing methods & techniques against the lefty I just took the center of the ring and bull rushed them and threw a thousand punches and mauled & brauled!!!! I stopped all 3 in the 5th round and my last 5 fights I avoided lefties because I hated to fight like that. There is a disciplined approach using techniques and then theres the bull approach.
Bottom line is "back him up" move your head as you cut the distance and throw more than he does! Which is the same thing you do when fighting anyone. When the bell rings you need to react, if your in there over thinking chances are your going to get whipped! So train for a southpaw but you must react once the bell rings!!!! Ray.
